another after severe post partum hemorrhage?

edited June 2014 in High-Risk Pregnancy
has anyone had another baby after a post partum hemorrhage? if so, did you hemorrhage again? i had my ds 2.5 years ago and hemorrhaged so badly i almost lost my life. my dh wants to have another baby, i am so scared to leave my ds, child, dh, family, friends everything. i saw the obgyn that treated me and she essentially blamed it on the nurses (which we assumed). i have yet to see my midwife since my 2wpp visit. would you chance it or be happy with just one? edit, i also had pre-e and gd.

  • i see you are expecting again too. best of luck!

yeah, i am also thinking of changing hospitals - to one bigger with hopefully more of an ability to be closely monitored. so with changing hospitals, i'll definitely need my records.

  • ds was big, 10lb'er big, and i am very petite. ob things there may have still been some placenta - it was not evident when she examined the placenta though. nurses were checking to make sure my uterus was contracting down while in the postpartum room. they thought they were feeling urine since my catheter came out in the or. they were not checking under my blankets while checking the uterus. my pulse skyrocketed, while my bp was dropping morbidly low. they were trying to massage, inserted medications vaginally and rectally, continued to massage and push but it was not working. ob rushed in from what was 40m away. other doctors on site, had to come assist. i had to have a d&c, given lots of blood and frozen platelets. so, me as a ftm, i did not know all of what should happen, how they should be checking, etc. i did not do a birthing class and it was not in pregnancy books that i had read. i have since educated myself more and am going to advocate for more ongoing ultrasounds so that baby does not get big. even though i am a believer that baby comes when ready (i delivered at 41w1d) i am going to see about delivering earlier. the l&d at hospital i was at, staffs 3 nurses - but can call more in from other floors as needed. so i think given what i went through, a bigger hospital would be best.

  • yeah, i was actually seen by a midwife. i am the one who continued to ask if i had pre-e because of the swelling i had was awful towards the end (not the typical end of pregnancy swelling). i ended up having a csection so the ob in the midwife's practice did the csection. midwife was there too. the csection went so smoothly that they all left after i got out of recovery. i plan on switching practices and hospitals for sure. i actually went to a new doctor a few weeks ago, and didn't like her. she was forcing me to have testing done (non-pregnancy related) that i don't care to get done. so i haven't gone back to have that testing.

  • I had a PPH with DS and just delivered my DD less than 2 weeks ago, no PPH with her.  With DS, my PPH was due to the fact that I had PreE (HBP, mag sulfate, and low platelets) and was told that if I didn't develop PreE again that my chances of another PPH were low.

Sure enough, I didn't get PreE with DD, and no PPH too.  My MWs did suggest a few preventative measures, though.  Even though I birthed at a freestanding birth center they still recommended a saline lock so they would have quick access to my veins if necessary and they also gave me a shot of pitocin as I delivered the placenta (helps the uterus contract and prevents PPH).

Good luck, and I hope your subsequent deliveries are better!
