Weight gain....not enough??

I was 110lbs before I got pregnant and at almost 21 weeks I have only gained 10lbs. My midwives don't seems to be worried, but I feel like I should be bigger. Are there any other small moms out there that have this worry?

  • 10 lbs is in the average range for 21 weeks and since you are pretty small already, I would think it's pretty normal. Women tend to gain most weight during the end of 2nd tri and beginning of 3rd tri. If MWs are not worried, then I wouldn't be.

  • yes, I've only gained 12lbs. I was so excited to finally weigh 100lbs. I'm 4'10 and my OB wants me to gain a lb a week from now on.

  • I'm 23 weeks and I have only gained 10 pounds so far. I only gained 24 pounds with my son. I wouldn't worry and would keep doing what you're doing if your provider isn't worried.

  • Im 23 weeks and at my last visit have only gained 1 pound over my starting weight. Last time, I gained 5 pounds the whole pregnancy. Its really ok.
  • I'm in your boat, though I started a little higher than you.  My OB said I'm right smack in the middle of normal weight gain with 10 lbs.  FWIW everyone (literally everyone no exaggeration) I tell my week number to tells me I'm very tiny for that week.  I'd take it as a blessing and not even think twice :)

  • 24 weeks and only "12 pounds" gained. I put quotes, because I had to guzzle water to produce a sample at the appointment..could be less.

    I wasn't that small to begin with, but I lost 10 pounds 1st tri.
  • My OB was concerned when I lost 2lb through week 16. He told me to eat more, so I did. I gained 11lb more by week 20. There is no way I ate 11lb worth of extra food in one month- my body was getting ready to even out anyway. I wish he hadn't seemed so concerned.

    I think you are doing fine and right on track- especially since your MW isn't concerned!
  • I think that's fine.  I was 107 pre-pregnancy and was only up 11 pounds at that time.  My dr isn't worried.

  • My rule of thumb when it comes to anything weight related (gain or lack thereof) - I only worry about it if my doctor is worried about it.  I am 25 weeks and have gained like 4 pounds (and I was on the thin side of average before I got pregnant).   My doctor is not worried - so me neither.  And the same thing happened with my last pregnancy.  I gained 18 pounds total and had a 9 pound kid - so your weight gain does not directly correlate with how your baby is gaining.

  • At 17 weeks I had gained 5 lbs, and then at 20 weeks I had lost 2 lbs. not sure what to make of that, but my doctor didn't say anything. I eat all day long. My belly is growing and my little girl is moving. I may call the doctor to check up on this.

  • Like PP said if your baby is measuring on and your MW isn't worried I don't see a point in worrying. Some people are just really small pregnant or otherwise. This girl I know looked like me now, 8 months pregnant. She thought she was ready to pop. I started out small and I put on all my weight in 2nd tri and I haven't changed anything I'm doing. It's just my body. My doctor has yet to even bring it up. I trust her, if she's not worried, than neither am I.

  • I'm 22 weeks and have also only gained 10 pounds. But my doctor said everything looked great. Feel like I should be bigger too just because everyone says that can't even tell I'm pregnant. I'm sure your okay :)
  • Same. I haven't been weighed since my 18w appointment, but I think I'd only gained 4 pounds at that point. I'm guessing I'm closer to 8-10 pounds now at 21w. My doc was not concerned. I wouldn't worry as long as you're being healthy.

  • Yep...I was overweight to begin with so I am only suppose to gain 15-20 pounds the whole pregnancy and I am already to 14 at 25 weeks.  Your body is going to do what your body is going to do and like @SPurp13 I just hope it comes off!

    If your health care provider seems fine with it then I wouldn't stress.

  • I'm in the same boat as you but not at all concerned. I was slim to begin with, and since becoming pregnant my eating habits haven't changed, so at 21w4d I've gained approx. 9lbs. Neither my nurse nor my doctor has brought it up as a concern so I don't see any reason to be worried.

    You are pretty much a superhero for being able to stick with staying so fit during pregnancy!  :)
  • I was still down 1 lb at my 19w appt and since then my home scale says I'm down one more. I asked my dr and she said as long as the baby looks healthy, they don't worry. I ate chicken spaghetti for breakfast, so I don't know how it's possible to still be losing weight, but whatever.

    You should have seen my training schedule before I got knocked up, dude. This is half of what I did prior to 12 weeks when my joints decided to be shit and not let me run my 30 miles per week. I'm just getting through what I can now, which feels like nothing to me, but I am aware that it's more than more, so I'm thankful!

    You are probably getting muscles with all that activity! I'm super jealous - I miss being active. I've heard labor is like running a marathon so you are going to be super prepared.
    I'm actually scared I'm losing muscle because this is about half of what I used to do. Still, maybe the added body weight helps to make what I DO more difficult? Maybe? Regardless, I'm trying. And I am indeed a marathoner (did my last half marathon at 12 weeks), so I'm hoping I'm prepared!

    I tried regular exercise a few times, but I would lose too much weight and get too muscular for my personal preference. So now I stick to a little bit of walking and playing with my little dogs which kept me between 105-110lbs while eating whatever I wanted. People keep telling me that my metabolism will eventually calm down, but being small seems to be in my genes. 
  • Just noticed you updated your profile pic! Nice. Is that your tattoo? If so, what does it mean to you? I guess, if it isn't yours, it still means something.

    Thanks. I finally got it to work. Im still working on one of those countdown ticker things, but it doesn't seem to be working yet. Its one of my Kurt Vonnegut tattoos. It reminds me that there are perfect moments that make life worth living. 
  • I'm almost 26 weeks and I've only gained 9lbs. My OB said its perfect. I was 140lbs & 5'10" per pregnancy. I'm right on track with what I gained with DS. My total weight gain with DS was 24lbs. I think you are doing great.
