  • We watched the PBS Documentary on these guys, and they were definitely coerced to confess. They were there for hours and repeatedly lied to and fed details. What's terrifying is that almost all of them had their parents there.

None of the DNA matched any of the kids. They basically rounded up five young black guys that were causing trouble in another area of the park and convinced them all to implicate one another so they could "go home." The ONLY evidence against them was their own confessions.

I don't have a problem with people getting big payouts when there's foul play involved in an innocent person getting convicted. The justice system isn't perfect, but when it's clear that police or prosecutors pursue charges when they know a person is innocent and people lose years of their life, money isn't even enough to make them whole.

I remember the story but had NO clue about the boys innocence, DNA & confession of this other guy. I don't believe that happened so long ago. I was only 7 and remember being scared to be at a park. Still to this day I think of it every time I so much as drive past a park.
To be honest, I'd like to see the documentary. How awful for those boys. I'm ok with the 5million payout/1mill each. I wonder what made the other guy (who really did it) confess?

Eta: oops. I think I misread the payout. Thought article stated 1 mill each...

I watched the documentary, and it was really sad. The kids were totally railroaded, and some with their parents on hand! It was an awful miscarriage of justice.

I have a hard time trusting our justice system, and this case didn't help. So sad.
