2nd Trimester

Sleeping positions please!

I'm 23 weeks pregnant, and I'm already having problems finding a comfortable sleeping position. Of course laying on my back or stomach isn't optional sadly, and sleeping only on my sides is killing my hips. Anyone recommend any sleeping positions?

Re: Sleeping positions please!

  • Well my stomach is too big to lay on, and my ob says not to sleep on my back because the weight of the uterus and baby presses against the spinal cord and nerves. And the fact I can't breathe on my back is another. I'm 4'11'' tall and didn't weigh much before pregnancy so all this extra weight is uncomfortable at only 23 weeks. I got very big quickly.

I'm 24 weeks and I am a back and belly sleeper too.

Yes, You are not suppose to sleep on your back after a certain time, but it's FLAT on your back.

If you are more comfortable sleeping on your back, I would definitely recommend getting a body pillow (or if you have one) and place it behind you. Then just roll to your back so that you are slightly tilted. I asked my doctor and the nurses and all said that sleeping that way is perfectly fine!

Why is sleeping on your back or stomach not ideal? Sleep however you can get comfortable...

    VIA: The American Pregnancy Association.

Sleeping on your back: This can cause problems with backaches, breathing, digestive system, hemorrhoids, low blood pressure and decrease in circulation to your heart and your baby. This is a result of your abdomen resting on your intestines and major blood vessels (the aorta and vena cava).

Sleeping on your stomach: When you are farther along in your pregnancy, your abdomen undergoes physical changes and makes it more difficult for you to lay on your stomach.

  • I have a pillow that I lay on my side at an angle. It's the closest I can get to my old position of sleeping on my stomach.

I also second the pillow behind your back. My OB said that was fine. I never realized how much of a back sleeper I really was until being pregnant!

I'm still sleeping on my stomach. Towards the end of pregnancy, I sleep on my side/stomach but still kind of on my stomach. The boppy wedge pillow is great.

ETA: Sleeping on your back is fine. Your body will wake you up if it becomes a problem.

    This^^
If I wake up and I am on my back, I just roll onto my side.

@theresat858‌ I'm totally jelly of you... I was an avid stomach sleeper, but my belly is too big for me to get comfortable! Thus why I flipped to my back at an angle. Not the same though...

All the doctors and books tell you NOT to sleep on your back as it will put pressure on your aorta and is unsafe for you and the baby
