Check In:   How is the diet going?  Any challenges that we can help out with?  Any new recipes/ successes that you want to share?  Rant/Vent about the lack of cookies?

QOTW:     Favorite way to eat summer veggies (I admit, this one is for me as I am struggling to come up with GD friendly recipes that DH will eat).

Re: Weekly GD Check In

  • Check In:  I finally got officially diagnosed yesterday by the Endo.  However, when he checked my lunch numbers (a little over 2 hours after I ate what I thought was a horrible GD lunch - with lots of mashed potatoes), my sugar count was only 88 and my A1C was 5.2.  So, we are both hoping that I can be diet controlled (well, on top of the Gluc that I have been on for Insulin Resistance for over 10 years).  Now, waiting to hear back from the hospital to schedule my "Diabetes Education" Class and my meeting with the nutritionist.

QOTW:  DH hates almost all veggies, except for high starch ones and tomatoes (which I am allergic to raw).  Last night, I stumbled on a recipe that he ate without complaint:  Zucchini "lasagna" with fresh mozzarella and basil pesto.  A bit of a pain to make but he ate it!  And suggested some minor modifications to make it better.

  • I have found very few things that don't shoot me over 140. I am suspecting meds soon which I don't want!
  • This week has been okay. I fell off the wagon with testing this past weekend. But my numbers have been good yesterday.

I like fresh summertime fruits. Veggies are great fresh. So beside the extreme heat of the summer. I enjoy the fresh food.

Getting tested this week and will find out if I can officially join you guys (I had GD with DS1).

I made this recipe yesterday and it was delish! Other than the tortellini, it was GD friendly and had lots of veges in it.

I'm seeing more high fasting numbers, but they're so irregular that my doctors are having a hard time deciding what to do about it. Over the past week, I had fasting numbers of 65, 127, 88, 143, 113, and 164. But everything stays in range during the day as long as I get in my exercise and eat low- to moderate-carb meals. Unless I take a nap. Naps make my blood sugar spike, too. Maybe I should just stop sleeping.

I'm generally not picky about how my vegetables are prepared as long as they're cooked. My stomach doesn't like raw veg very much. My husband made his ginger chicken soup the other day, which is mostly kale, zucchini, onions, carrots, celery, ginger, garlic, and a little chicken. I love it!

  • 65 is low to me for fasting.

Mine is usually 85-95. They don't like it to drop below 70 so I'm surprised by that.
  • So I havent been tested yet but I was wondering when you (especially the STMs) got tested. My doctor said that I should book for sometime next week, I'll be 24 weeks, and that seems really early, at least I think I tested around 28 weeks with DD. Thanks!

  • @MRSclark08.....I have the same 3 high risk factors. With the GD diet I have lost between 5 to 7 lbs. So it can be a good thing.

Like I said earlier. It will be hard to get used to, but once you get the hang of it. It becomes second nature.

I am good on the diet. I am just a rebel when it comes to testing. I have even gone to the extent of putting my meter in the kitchen so I remember and I have not tested today. So time to get my butt in gear and just do it. I have to remember that it is not about just me any more. I am carrying another human that I effect. Just needs to take effect in my brain.

  • @MRSclark08 - Welcome.  I have the same risk factors (plus pre-existing HBP, but maintained through meds).  I am also waiting to attend the local hospital's classes as that seems to be the only places that do them in the DC area (my Endo didn't even try to set up a meal plan for me - just referred me to INOVA's Diabetes care clinic).

@Sockgnome78 - I end up setting a kitchen timer to remind me to test.  I can remember the fasting test but need the timer to go off to remind me to test 2 hours after I finish eating (otherwise, the next thing I know, it will be time for the next meal and I will have missed the prior testing and already have eaten my snack).

@MorganWP, I tested at 28 weeks with DS1 and since I had GD, they want me to get tested at 24 weeks with DS2. My test is tomorrow. From what I have seen on these boards, testing at 24 weeks is common for STMs who had GD with their first.

Strange, I didn't have it with my first. Maybe precautionary then?

Ok, I did a quick Google search and 24-28 weeks in the normal range for them to test for GD. Could be that they are just being cautious and are testing you on the early side of the range. Was your first a bigger baby? Do you have other risk factors?

  • My numbers have been high and I think the insulin resistance is starting to kick in.  My endo adjusted everything on Monday, but my morning fasting and after breakfast numbers are still way too high.  It's frustrating...  I feel like I'm doing such a bad job.  I know that the insulin resistance is only supposed to get worse the farther along I get, so I'm kind of sad that I've done such a good job so far and now it feels like I can't control it.

My favorite way to eat veggies is in a salad or on the grill.  I LOVE huge salads.  Whenever I eat them, which is pretty often, I make them in a big mixing bowl.. and eat the entire thing.  So good!

    @ss265 She was 9lbs 9oz.

I googled the risk factors and the only one I can think would apply to me is that I'm half black.

It could be because your DD was on the larger side but I'm just speculating. I would ask your OB.

  • Yeah, I see her pretty soon after the test so I'll ask. But thank you!

  • I think week 24-28 is standard.
  • I'm not being tested until much later for some reason. I've been testing 6-8 times a day cuz I'm majorly anal-retentive about this. I have been slacking a little on the diet because my numbers from week 8 until last week have been amazingly low and my a1c was 4.6 in April, but now everything is starting to creep up.

Do your docs tell you to test 2 hours after you start eating or 2 hours after you finish eating? I always thought it was 2h after the start of a meal.

I always test 2 hrs from the start of when I am eating but honestly I don't think it matters for me. I eat super quick. I eat in about 10 mins or less but I work for a dispatch center and there isn't much time to eat. I guess after 9 years it became a habit to eat quickly.
  • @MagnetaMouse I specifically asked my endo about when to test and he said to test 2 hours after I finish eating (as long as I eat the meal in a reasonable amount of time).  For work lunch, that might be a struggle as I frequently take up to 45 minutes to eat lunch due to getting pulled away for other things.

@MRSClarke08 - I was also thinking we are in the same general area.  I ended up going with INOVA Fair Oaks for the class as it is at least somewhat close to home, but not work  (ie, good excuse to work from home on those days).  At least my one hour consult post class is at 8 am.  I just took the first group class they had - just to get it done.

I'm only suggesting this because I have issues with my glucose levels bouncing around, and I know it's scary to wake up to a sudden low when you're not used to them. For the first few nights, I would set an alarm for a couple of hours after you go to sleep so that you can check your blood sugar and have a small snack or some juice or milk if you're a little low. I hope the glyburide works well for you!

Ill do that thanks. I was a bit worried about that.

    Any suggestions on snacks?
  • Yum starburst :)

I think we have those here so that works for tonight
  • My endo and I have already discussed the possibility of adding insulin as my fasting numbers are borderline most days - post meal numbers are good so we are trying diet controlled to start.  After going through IVF with similar needles, the thought of insulin and the injections don't bother me (I would rather have insulin than some of the oral pills as it is easier to control/modify the dose of the insulin).  The first injection was hard to get past the mental block of doing the injection (ie, causing yourself pain), but once it was over, the rest were pretty easy to do.  The needles are pretty small and thin, so you honestly don't feel much.  And if you get the insulin pen, it is even easier.
