So we think we have a boy name, Gideon August. The problem is our last name starts with S ... thoughts on intials. Also, we are thinking about using August for the first name if its a girl. I know its not common as a girl name, but we really like it.
I would use August Gideon and avoid the initial issue. You can always call him Gideon if that is your preference. And please don't use August for a girl. It is a boys name. There is a kids making fun of issue there too. My middle name is Lee, not the girl spelling of Leigh. My mom thinks it is great, but I have hated having a boys name for a middle name my whole life. When kids found out at school I was teased about it...and it wasn't like I was a weird kid who normally got picked on. If you like August, just use a girl version like Augusta.

I have known two people in my life named August, and they were both girls. I didn't know August was a boy's name until just now when I read this thread. I always thought it was a nice name for a girl.
PPs point about using it as a first name when your child is born in August is a good on, though. I would probably avoid that.
Please don't use the initials GAS! My initials growing up were MES and I got teased about being a mess all the time. Kids will look for anything to pick on other kids about and they can be mean!
I agree with PP and switch the names around, he can still go by his middle name.
I also agree August isn't a girls name. As someone who calls clients on the phone regularly it is tough when I am expecting one gender to ansewer and them I get the other. I have client currently named Kelly, who is male, and I have a big note so I remember! So please don't put your kid in that situation!

Wow...you must have gone to school with some cruel kids...my middle name is Lee and I have loved the spelling of my middle name my entire life. In fact I lived it so much I kept it my middle name when I got married instead if moving my maiden name to my middle name. No one ever picked on me because of the spelling and they knew what it was...
However, I do agree that August for a girl just does not work...
It's weird, I didn't realize that August was supposed to be a boy name. I've always thought of it as a 'month name" which I've always associated with girl names and the only August I know is a girl. I don't find it very masculine.

I've never heard if anyone getting rid of their middle name and using their last name in lieu of it. I would find that extremely bizarre!
