Bad eating

I have had the worst time with eating healthy lately. I try and eat fruit and meats, and still take my prenatals but, I have cravings all the time for sweet things and kool-aid, I do not drink soda and I if by chance I do, it is always no caffeine. but I hate that I cant stick to a healthy diet and worried that my Glucose test will be bad :( I feel like I am always thirsty (I work mostly outside) and try to drink water but even that is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I am 23 weeks and 2 days pregnant. Any advise, or anyone going through it too??

I'm about a week ahead of you! 24w1d!
I didn't eat the best in my first tri but I have gotten a lot better.
The best advice I can give that helped me is to just NOT have those temptations in your house!
Also if you have little snack bags or containers of pre-cut (I am emphasizing pre-cut!) fruits and veggies in your fridge, you're more likely to grab it!
Stick to high protein snacks too!
If you like sweet and salty I definitely recommend dark chocolate pretzels, yogurt pretzels, honey roasted nuts, things of that nature to curb your sweet tooth.
In regards to water- I love using Mio! It flavors your water with 0 calories and no sugar/artificial sweeteners!

    Good Luck!!!

I hear you. Last few days have been tough. I want to eat all the sweets!!
For me, what curbs it is a pretty big spoonful of peanut butter and I take a huge bite so my mouth is super sticky. It's weird but it works. I feel like my dog eating peanut butter. Sometimes I'll mix a little jelly in it.
As for eating the healthy stuff, I just shove it in and eat... Sometimes eating isn't fun but I gotta get my protein and veggies in. Tracking how much I eat sometimes motivates me to meet my goals.
And water, have you tried those packets of like crystal light or other flavored water? That works for some people. Or even throwing in some lemon, mint, or cucumber can make it interesting and mask the plain water taste.
Don't get too frustrated though! We all have bad days. Just try to focus on one meal or snack at a time. One unhealthy snack or meal doesn't mean the whole day is ruined!!

  • I totally understand. I actually eat fairly healthy every day but feel the need for something sweet almost every night. I usually indulge it but keep it tame - like 2-3 fruit crisp cookies or a cup, not bowl of ice cream or a glass of chocolate milk - I think in moderation its okay. Also, I keep lots of fruit juice (apple juice/orange juice with Vitamin D) and Lemonade (all just juice with no added sugar, except for the lemonade) in the house and sometimes just a big glass of apple juice helps. I'm getting sugar, but its fruit-based, so not as bad - and sometimes fills that need for fluid when water is making me gag.

  • I am right there with you. I am 24W 1D When I have sweet cravings I still cave in here and there, but I try to have things like greek yogurt and fruit at home at all times if I have a sweet craving. The greek yogurt is great because it is a good source of protein and calcium while I still get my sweet fix.  We bought a pack of Reeses Oreos the other night, and DH hid them from me and I get 2 a night if I want.  It helps me to keep my portions under control but I still get a little taste of what I want. Spoon full of PB is a good fix too :)

  • I pigged out yesterday and I'm regretting it now. I always eat crap when I either don't cook, or I don't prepare ahead.

Needless to say, I'll be cooking today to make sure I have healthy and yummy foods available!
  • I don't think you should beat yourself up because one day you wanted sweets so you ate cookies for lunch and then ate an ice cream sundae after dinner. I feel like if you eat things in moderation , that's the important thing. Just like it wouldn't be healthy to eat a whole package of cookies you also shouldn't eat a whole watermelon. Like PP said eating sweets isn't going to cause you to fail your glucose test. I have a lot of low calorie bars that are high in protein that I can just grab and eat. Also Popsicle's, zero fat. I eat one and that pretty much does it for me. Skinny cow makes some good low calorie sweet things too! You can eat sweets and still be perfectly healthy, in moderation.

  • Eh, I try to eat fairly well but I don't beat myself up over it. I still walk 3 miles a day and take my prenatals. If I want to eat donuts and cheeseburgers 3 times a week, I think it's okay. I struggled with eating disorders in high school and early college and I had a difficult time adjusting to weight gain in pregnancy. After a few heart to hearts with my doctor, I've accepted that I'm going to gain weight and I should just make sure I'm still active. That said, I don't go overboard, but I think it's all in moderation.
  • I had a really healthy diet last pregnancy, was super active, of normal weight, and no family history of diabetes and still failed my GD test with flying colors. I don't think you'll fail your GD test based on eating unhealthy alone. I keep lots of fresh cut up veggies in my fridge, fresh fruit and almonds to snack on. I try to eat healthy 80 to 90% of the time but sometimes I just can't resist a pepperoni roll or that ice cream sandwich.
  • I don't know if this is helpful at all, but I was eating really unhealthy until about 14 weeks, and I finally got back on the bandwagon of healthy eating and feel a lot better.

What I do is allow myself 1 splurge meal every weekend! That way if I am craving something during the week, I just tell myself I will make it my splurge meal this week! I feel like it helps me stay on track during the week, because I know I will get to enjoy it before too long.

For example, I have been daydreaming about the enchiladas I'm going to eat on Saturday since Monday :0)

  • Keep the temptations as far away as possible and replace with the good stuff! Rather than drinking sugar beverages there are always alternatives such as organic lemonades, cranberry juices and other jam packed yummy drinks with natural sugars. You may be craving sweets cause your body is lacking natural sugars, keep as much fruit in the house as you can eat... and also with the water issue I find that the colder the water the better so I keep a ton of ice in my water, definatly helps me to drink more of it! Good luck.

  • It is hard to eat well while pregnant. OP, I feel your concerns and I struggle with it too. I love the suggestion of adding flavors like cucumber or lemon to water to make it more palatable... I was going to suggest seltzer, too. My partner is really into all the Polar seltzer summer flavors--blueberry lemonade, cucumber melon, etc... they taste great and have no sugar.

Make sure you're not depriving yourself. There are lots of foods that are both rich AND healthful: cheese sticks, nuts, beef jerky (just watch for MSG), veggies dipped in sour cream, eggs, etc. I sometimes eat a sugar-free, whole grain cereal like Muesli with half & half poured over the top. No guilt there.

To some of the responders who have suggested in so many words "don't worry about it," we have to acknowledge that food consumption is more than just weight gain. We're building babies here! Babies need nutrients from whole foods and healthy fats from olive oil, butter, and fish. Being at peace with weight gain does equal eating lots of junk food. I like to remember that my baby can taste what I'm eating in her amniotic fluid. She's learning food preferences from what I provide her, and that motivates me to feed her fresh, whole foods.

Actually, while I couldn't keep much down in the first Tri, my blood sugars were amazing. (Mostly because all my doses were too aggressive.) So on the days where I accidentally over-carb count my meals, I supplement with ice cream. (Should that be a FFFC? I feel like I just offended every person with diabetes ever.)
Not offended because I'm the same way.  I always err on the side of giving myself more insulin because if my blood sugar goes low later, I can have a treat.  I'm terrible.

  • I may or may not have gone to a gourmet cupcake shop today and purchased a half dozen cupcakes for myself...AKA already ate 2 of them. Chocolate chip cookie dough stuffed and an Oreo cookie cupcake so far. Now I feel bad...but my baby is loving it!
