Camping

So I'm leaving the valley tomorrow morning and going camping in Big Sur with my parents since DH is away. The last time we went camping we went to our usual spot here in Mineral King, and well with morning sickness and a toddler it was pretty miserable. But it got me thinking since a lot of us will be going camping and or making summer trips, what do you feel is essential for camping and road tripping with kids?

Re: Camping

  • I bring busy bags in the car for our toddler and an iPod for long trips as well (I'm one of those moms) As for camping we bring a bike for our toddler, buckets/shovels, some pre made snacks for easy grabbing, glow sticks and flashlights etc...she is pretty easy as long as she can be outdoors having fun. For the baby - bug net, co sleeper for tent, backpack/beco, blankets and toys. I like to make pre-made foil dinners, cut and wash fruit before we go etc. We love camping!

  • I haven't gone yet but am planning to go with LO and the 2 year old this summer, so following this post!

Does anyone bring a seat for baby, like a bouncer or something? And what about sleeping? I don't really want to bring a PnP but torn between hauling the Moses basket there and just sleeping with him. Toddler has his own sleeping bag.

Well we survived! Glad we brought the nosefreda and saline spray. I didn't bring a PNP, but the co sleep worked wonders again. I should have brought extra blankets as DD1 kept excaping the sleeping bag in the middle of the night. Was able to walk DD1 and the dog while wearing #2 in the ergo. I ended up wearing my dad's coat as pull over sweaters are PITA for BFing at night when it's cold. We brought a wheelbarrow set with shovels and buckets for DD1 and she had a great time collecting leafs around camp. I will be adding poison oak soap to the first aid kit, as DD grabbed it but we seem to have washed her off in time!

Can I ask what your baby slept in? We have a co sleeper for camping as well but am wondering about clothing and how to keep her warm at night.
  • I put DD2 in a zip up footed cotton sleeper with a button up bottom footless cotton baby long johns (by burts bees), both were long sleeved. And she wore a knitted hat. It was in the 50s at night in big sur. I covered her in a thermal blanket and the co sleeper was mostly in the sleeping bag with me. We've camped with DD1 in 30-40 degree nights in mineral king and I dressed her in 3 fleece sleep sacks, which was probably over kill as she was sweaty in the morning.
  • We are going camping in a month in the okanagan (BC wine country) so it will be hot and dry. Other than the co-sleeper (and a breast pump!!) I have no clue what to bring! It's only for one night... Any input on the bare essentials would be appreciated!
  • @thejewelster‌ I think the biggest thing is to be able to dress them in layers. You can always take a layer off but you can't create a layer that doesn't exist. And if you bring a breast pump what's your storage plan? I brought mine but didn't bring and bags! I didn't end up pumping so it was fine.
  • @RedDawnsRevenge... are you Bay Area? We are and might be neighbors. Haven't been to Big Sur but it sounds beautiful!

  • The pump is so I can dump and relieve engorgement. I planned on pumping in the am so I can sample wine too but I'm not sure we can trust a cooler with ice to keep the milk temp safe. Any suggestions here? The 2nd night we are staying in a hotel so that should be fine :).
Extra clothes/layers is good plan. I'd rather have more than less for sure!
  • @haziedaze‌ no I'm in the Central Valley, Tulare. It was a 5hr drive to Big Sur. I hadn't been since I was a teenager.
