SwaddleMe vs. Halo SleepSack

Remind me of the debate. I believe Halo is preferred now, because the SwaddleMes have a higher risk of SIDs?

I'm looking through my registry, removing and adding things (my friend brought me a HUGE amount of stuff from her baby today), and I had swaddlemes on it. I can't decide whether to remove them and add halos or not.

Re: SwaddleMe vs. Halo SleepSack

  • I've hears it's more about baby's preference so to get 1 of each. I also registered for a miracle blanket too.

  • Never heard of that. But we had both at different times. DD loved to be swaddled in the SwaddleMe until about 3 or 4 months then she could wriggle her arms out and hated being confined. So we switched her into the sleep sack and she liked those until she started rolling over in her sleep, around 6 months.

And honestly, the SwaddleMes saved us. I dont think any of us wouldve gotten sleep without it.

  • I agree that it's about baby's preference. I like to swaddle with a muslin blanket and once they outgrow the swaddle I like the sleep sacks.

  • We wouldn't have survived without them. We used both, but I did not care for the swaddle me's. The halo was much better. The swaddle me's run small and the velcro sticks to everything else.

  • DD preferred the Halo. She only was willing to be swaddled with her arms in for a couple of weeks though - after that it was basically a wearable blanket.

  • We had a swaddle me, sleep sacks, and a woombie. We used all of them at various times. I wouldn't register for multiples of the same swaddle and wait and see what works for you. If your friend bought you one type then register for the other and you can try both.

  • We love the Halo. We did swaddling with DD, but by the time DS was born the hospital told us that swaddling wasn't recommended anymore.

    What? I wonder why?

The only thing I found about it was that if the baby can't flail their arms to wake itself up, it falls into too deep of a sleep and doesn't wake up. There was also some bit about overheating.

This was discussed on this board, but it was a while ago and it was buried in another thread. It was a thread about the hospital, and someone mentioned the same thing as @italiangal1033--that hospitals are not swaddling anymore and they give you a halo sleepsack. I'm SURE my hospital is 10 years behind that realization, if it's true, so that's why I brought it here.

I will say, other than the discussion that happened in that thread a few months ago, I hadn't heard it, and when I tried searching last night, I couldn't find a lot about it. So, I'm still up in the air.

  • I believe Halo gives the sleep sacks to hospitals to use and give out.  I think it's just the risk of swaddling the legs too tight, which is suppose to cause hip displasyia.

  • Interesting, I haven't heard about the risks either. DD was swaddled at the hospital and she is only 17 month old.

Us too. DD is almost a year and they taught us to swaddle at the hospital. But we could never get it tight enough to how she liked so the SwaddleMe it was.

That sounds familiar, too. But, like I said, I read all of this a few months ago....and when I tried to do my own search, I don't come up with anything convincing, so I put a sleepsack on my registry and a swaddleme. I'll keep my eye out and update the board if I do find something convincing in the meantime.

  • I've never heard of the Swaddle me's being a SIDS risk? Can you link us with the article, OP? I used them for DS and they were great. You do have to be careful to not bring the swaddle up too high, like as in they should never be near the neck or face, but it says that right in the instructions.

We have both Halo's and Swaddle Me's for DD and I plan to use both.

There wasn't an article--someone said it here. It was buried in a discussion about whether or not hospitals have the babies in the rooms with you or not, or whether or not you should bring blankets or some such thing, and someone said her hospital sends babies home with the sleepsack now, and you are not supposed to swaddle.

All I can find, however, when I do a search is that it causes overheating, which can lead to SIDs, and that the baby can't move its arms to startle itself awake if it's in too deep of a sleep, also causing SIDs. NOTHING official though. So, I'm still torn about what to do.

Let me search through my posts HERE, and see if maybe I commented on that thread, but I probably didn't. I lurk a ton.

  • Bumping because I have a question. I just found a swaddleme at a thrift store for $1 so I bought it even though we never swaddled DD.

But it has a slit in the back that looks like it could be to thread a car seat buckle through? Is that what it is for and then the rest of it goes around the buckle? Or is it for something else?

I believe that slit is for easy access to check for a wet/poopy diaper. Pretty sure it's never safe to thread any kind of clothing through a car seat strap.

I just looked up the product description and that is actually what the slit is for. It says it is designed to fit most 5-point harness systems in swings or car seats. I dont see a safety issue with this since the fabric is so thin and the only layer that should be behind the buckle would be the back layer.

Interesting. The baby care class I went to a couple weeks ago just taught us how to swaddle. Must go research.

That's Canada for you! Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it's different in other parts of Canada FFS.

I hate how this shit is always changing. Don't get me wrong, I love research and the betterment of society and all, but FFS it would be great if people could just agree, KWIM. I already bought some awesome swaddle stuff.

Hell, here's an early FFFC - knowing what I was taught this week, I still plan to swaddle.

Seriously. I've been really excited about swaddling and got a few of the above items, and now they're out? No wonder my mom looks at my registry in bafflement...imagine how many of the recommendations we're getting now will be outdated in 5 years.

  • My son detested swaddling and wiggled out of everything so halo it was for us and all were happy.

  • We had one SwaddleMe with a slit in the back but never used it in the carseat or swing. My SO loved it for checking diapers, especially the pampers swaddlers that have the little wetness indicator line. He was pretty close to cutting slits into the others we had.
