Let's talk HSG

Talk to me about the HSG. I had one last time, but it's been almost 5 years. I had a c-section with my son, and that's why the Dr is pushing the issue of having one before moving forward. She said it isn't uncommon for woman who have had c-sections to have "debris" or even a blockage- anyone heard that before. Also, it was a short test right, time wise- mine is scheduled for 12:15 on Friday, and I planned to just take a long lunch, and I should take motrin or something right?!

All I remember last time when I had it, is my Dr telling a lot of people end up pregnant the month you have it because it flushes you out, well I didn't get pregnant that month. Tell me your experience please...

Thanks

My History:
Lots of BFN's & failed IUI's w/clomid and/or femara
Finally BFP with femara & t.i.- son born 6/17/2010
Started TTC again around when DS was 3ish
Lots of BFN's with femara & t.i & ovidrel
Tubes clear, S.A came back low motility but high count
About to switch to injectables w/femara, did one last cycle with just femara & an IUI with ovidrel- stupid motility was fantastic in the sample, but count was 700,000 AFTER wash! Had to sign a paper to even still do IUI- BFFP (big fat freaking positive) Go figure!

Re: Let's talk HSG

  • I am a freak and it was less painful than my IUIs.  My doctor and the radiology tech kept asking me if I was ok and rubbing my shoulders and I was like "when are you going to start"?  So weird.  I had mine in March for the same reason, 2 breech babies and c-sections needed so doctor wanted me to have an HSG.  Everything was perfect but not pg yet :(

  • ok so i might be in the minority here...

just had mine in may. that shit hurt like a bitch. but they also had a helluva time keeping the catheter inside my ute, it kept slipping out. no i don't have a loose vag. but apparently i have an unforgiving cervix! ha ha  anyhow the uncomfortable part was getting the catheter past my cervix (LOTS of cramping) and then when they actually injected the dye because my tube was blocked it blew up my tube and that hurt like a bitch. but once they were done fucking around in there no more pain at all. definitely take a motrin. maybe a valium! hahahahaha

oh and i've had 3 d&cs and a c-section fwiw. and i haven't heard of having to do it solely because of a c-section. and techincally it's my 2nd cycle post-hsg but i only have 1 tube and this month is the month i'm supposed to have a shot at getting pg THIS month so hopefully the HSG blew something open! • I had one about a month ago, and I actually didn't feel it at all. I haven't had a c section, just a vaginal birth with ds. The part that is supposedly painful lasts for around 15 seconds I was told. However, I just had a hysteroscopy done last week, and that hurt more than the HSG. Ironically, the Dr. said that HSG usually hurts more than hysteroscopy. Other way around for me! I was also told that some people do get pregnant after HSG, since it does flush/clean everything out. Didn't work for me last month, we'll see about this time!

  • This was the most painful test to me of them all. The Dr had to forcefully dilate my cervix, and the whole thing was just very painful/ uncomfortable- the good thing is, it only lasts about 3-5 minutes, so even if it's painful for you, you should be alright because it's so quick.

Sounds like you already got your answer but mine was pretty painful but short lived. I second bringing your own pad. Good luck though, It will be fine and over quickly.

My RE doesn't give me technical names for stuff. You guys are talking about HSG and I'm all, I had a tube flush and an x-ray. What does HSG stand for?

  • Mine was not necessarily painful BUT it took two people 15 minutes and three different speculums to find my cervix! It was the most uncomfortable thing as the head radiologist kept assuring me that there was nothing wrong with me while her resident and her searched for the apparently buried treasure. Maybe that's why I'm not KU yet...

Anyway this is my 'cycle after' and I had a BFN at 12Dpo... We'll see.

I had mine in March. It wasn't really painful at all. I did take 800 mg of Motrin an hour before. It didn't take long at all to do. I felt very minor cramping when they injected the dye but that is it. I have also heard it increases your chances of pregnancy but it didn't work for me.

My OB said 800 mg was fine to take before mine. I would go with the higher dose for less cramping.
