Those who give their LOs Zantac

Did you notice increased fussiness at all? I'm worried Vin is having a bad reaction to it. He's been on Zantac for about two days.

Also I noticed today he is pooping a lot more. Normally I get one poop a day or once every three days.

He has pooped three times today, big ones- not sure if this is related but I'm wondering if his stomach is upset from the medicine. It looks normal, it's just a lot.

  • We didn't see an improvement from the Zantac until day 4. Maybe your LO is fussy because it isn't working yet? We didn't have any change in poop that I can remember.

  • We saw improvement in probably two days but the dr said it may take up to two weeks. We actually had a lot less fussiness overall. No change to poops. Could be that it is not effective yet...

  • We had less fussiness, if anything, I felt like it made her drowsy at first. I never noticed any change in poops.

  • It didn't seem to work at first, but after a week I could see improvenents. I can't remember what it did to his poops. Now after his morning zantac and feed he poops and after the next feed he poops too. Don't know if it's the med or just how he poops. If you think it's upsetting his stomach I would stop giving it and call the pedi. No need to make LO miserable if it's just a med issue.

  • I know I am torn- the doc said it would probably take a few days for it to work. It could just be a coincidence that he is extra fussy, but I also don't just want to keep giving it to him if it's the issue!

I think I'll stop and see if it changes, if not it's not the meds. I'll give my pedi a call tomorrow to discuss.

My poor little guy- he has had trouble gaining and I thought it was do to reflux so I was hoping the Zantac would help. Ugh.

  • I noticed more spit up at first. I thought it might be in my head but it happened again when we increased his dose. After a full wk I saw an overall improvement. I would give it more time. I remember thinking DD also got worse before better when she went on it.

  • @Holljade‌ Yeah, LO doesn't even normally spit up much (silent reflux) but it was worse when we started and then again when we increased it. I'm pretty sure the pedi didn't believe me when I told her, but whatever. I know my kid. Maybe give it until Friday? That way if there is an issue you won't have to wait through the weekend. It also can't hurt to just call.

  • It kicked in for our LO after about 2 days. We definitely did see an increase in poop but I figured
that was because he was actually digesting more food. The color/smell/texture were normal.

  • Same here- after 2 days of zantac he was much better. We got less poops per day, but it was due to also adding rice cereal, which was binding him up.
  • I am noticing him eating less/not wanting to nurse as much. He's had weight gain issues so this is really frustrating, this one day or even if it was 1/2a day) could totally screw us up. Calling pedi first thing in the morning.

  • We ended up calling tonight- we are taking him to the ER he hasn't eaten since 4:30 and won't take breast or bottle.

  • Less fussiness here. If I miss a dose the fussiness increases noticeably.
  • You did the right thing. When in doubt, go get looked at. Glad everything is better!

  • Better safe than sorry! I have called 911 when DS had his first choking incident (before we knew he had reflux) and felt dumb when the paramedics arrived to find him over it & peacefully sleeping.

Reminds me though, do your LOs gasp or stop breathing ever? Mine does briefly and his lips even tuen blue for two seconds. I am going to call dr about it today because it is occurring more now.
  • Glad I'm not the only one :)

I regards to stopping breathing (how scary!) He gasps in his sleep, I haven't seen his lips turn blue, though.

I have to have a followip with the doc today so I'm going to ask about it

  • Hope you get to the bottom of it @Holljade‌

  • Zantac didn't work for one of my little guys, so they put him on Prevacid which only slightly helps. The dr mentioned giving him both but that seems like a lot of medication so I'm iffy about it.
  • We just got switched to Prevacid today. I hope it works
  • Has anyone increased dosage based on weight. It doesn't seem to be as effective as it once was and I'm thinking I should go for a weight check so the ped can increase the dosage.

  • @bootsiebabe‌ LO went from .7 mL at his 1 mo to .9 mL at his 2 mo. He gained 3.5 lbs. We had started to see it working less also. When she increased his dosage it took a wk to see an improvement, just like when we first started.

  • @Gracie Randolph

How are you administering the prevacid? They gave me pills :(
  • @bootsiebabe‌ my DS was initially on 1 ml twice a day, but about 3 weeks later when he started gaining weight from the formula we had to increase his dose to 1 1/2 ml. I don't think it's as effective, but it did take about 5 days to see the full effect of the new dose.
