Sunscreen recs?

DS1 is breaking out from the Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen.  Is this common?

Also, any that don't run into the eyes when wet?

I have used the leftover  Aveeno baby and this is the 2nd time we've gone out and I've gotten sunburned.  I used it on the kids, but they also have UPF 50 rashgards, hats and swim diapers on.  And then a swimsuit, so they're pretty covered so they don't have much chance to get burned.

any reccomendations?

Re: Sunscreen recs?

  • I usually go without.  I make a point of putting sunscreen on my 6 yo red head but am more lax with my other two because they tan like I do (or we may burn & tan  the next day).

I have Neutrogena and Up and Up ones now.  I get regular formula now, but I have an 8, 6 & 4 yo's.
  • This is my go to for sunscreen recs.

  • We use California Baby. Two of my kids have really sensitive skin, Lydia has excema and Fiona also has dry/red splotchy skin but hasn't been to the dr for it. I'm pretty sure Fiona also has excema so I slather her problem areas with Aquafor when they flare up. Anyway, California Baby is great!! Expensive though, $20 for the little tube.

  • If they're having a reaction, I'd try a mineral sunscreen. Badger is good, so is Burnout. It's expensive, but they don't have the chemicals you find in the grocery store brands, and that's what a lot of people react to.
  • We use Badger. DS has fair skin and hasn't gotten burnt.
  • Neutrogena beach defense. Aveeno started breaking Z out & getting in her eyes & making her eye red with a crazy rash on her face :(
  • I use Coppertone Kids. My kids have never had a bad reaction or gotten a burn.

  • DS has eczema and I use Coppertone Sensitive Skin because it has no fragrance. I use a zinc stick on their faces and the girls get whatever with 50 or higher. No burns so far, but I stopped using Banana boat kids because they were getting quite a bit of color with it. I actually prefer store brands.

  • I've used banana boat with DD, partly because it's one of the few brands that doesn't let ME burn. She had eczema as a baby and still flares up occasionally but she's never had problems with the sunscreen. Granted' because of the eczema, she's very used to having lotions (sometimes oily goopy ones) slathered all over her, so she doesn't itch or wipe at the sunscreen at all.
  • https://www.ewg.org/2014sunscreen/sun-safety-gets-easier/ <-- an interesting link about products used in sunscreen and what to look for. This one is about spray on sunscreens and the risks they pose for young children in particular. https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2011/07/don-t-spray-sunscreens-on-kids-at-least-for-now/index.htm
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • Banana boat natural reflect baby or babyganics.   There is some pretty crazy stuff in sunscreen.  I'm trying to move away from the chemical sunscreens and use zinc based ones.

I've researched making my own sunscreen, but I'm not sure I'm ready to jump into that yet.
