Ice Cream

A mom who was in the NICU with her son the same time as my son posted a picture on Facebook of her 7.5 month old (4.5 corrected) eating from an ice cream cone. She posts pictures of other questionable things-napping face down on a pillow, propped up in a garbage can, eating solids well before a doctor would recommend it. I'm just annoyed by how clueless she is and wonder what other things she does that are bad that she doesn't post on fb! I imagine a forward facing car seat in the front seat!!

Re: Ice Cream

  • Oh my! Sounds like she needs some parenting lessons.
    BFP #1 (7/13/12) MC (8/14) 9 weeks. D & C 8/17.
BFP #2 (5/18/13) due 1/26/14. Grow baby grow!
    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • With DS1 my MIL was always trying to get me to give him foods that weren't appropriate for his age. When he was 4 months old she attempted to give him some icing from a cake, I had to swat her hand away because she just reached out to do it without asking while I was holding him. She also tried to give him chocolate pudding around 5 months.
For these reasons she never babysat him until he was past 2 years old.  It totally pissed her off that we wouldn't let her but I was seriously scared about her decision making skills.

My MIL is the same...Both of them actually (he has a step mom as well) when DD was 3-4 months old his step mom tried to give her hot tea from a spoon. Just recently we went to visit his mom in Georgia and she gave River french fries. I came back to the table and the fries were hanging out of her mouth. I was furious. DH said it was a culture thing (his mom and step mom are both Korean). But still, it's totally ridiculous.

Wow, I can't believe people do things like that.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one with a crazy MIL. Mine asks me every time I see her if I've given DD juice yet. And every time I tell her the same thing. She is far too young and juice has no nutritional value. Plus she has reflux so juice wouldn't be a great choice if she was allowed to have it. She will not be babysitting DD ever.

  • This is crazy talk, can't believe people would even think to do that especially icing from a cake and pudding. Lots of sugar. I would be furious if anyone gave DS shit like that without permission and even with permission these babies are too young for this.

It is crazy, especially since MIL and FIL are both diabetic, and all their kids were overweight.  We didn't let DS1 have juice until he was nearly 2 years old, and we still cut it with at least 50% water, if not more.  He actually will ask people for "juice with water in it".

  • My cousin has a daughter who is 6 weeks younger than DD, and they gave her a lollipop - and ice cream - when she was about a month old. My mom thought it was cute. I told my mom there was no way in hell DD would be getting any of that anytime soon.

  • SO and MIL are both guilty for trying to give DD a taste of ice cream and buttercream icing from a cake. I had to remind them that she can't have dairy products...

  • All of the above reasons are exactly why my MIL won't ever be alone with my child if I have a choice!
