I have been showing for months, but now random people out and about will say "Congratulations" to me. It is kind that they are being thoughtful, but...How do you respond to this?
??? How about a "thank you" for their good tidings? Wth? How is this ambiguous? Maybe they weren't 100% confident to say it before considering how faux pas it is to accidentally assume a woman is pregnant... When she is not.
As long as the strangers aren't touching you, I definitely think the polite response is the way to go. Women will flock to pregnant women. It happens. Especially the grandmothers. Just be nice and let them adore you for the hot second.

I say "thanks!" Congratulations is about the only thing a stranger can say about my pregnancy that I don't find annoying. When some one's eyeing my belly and clearly wanting to say something, I feel so relieved when that's what comes out.
I stopped making eye contact with strangers once I realized they were all wincing in response to looking at me. I'd welcome a "congrats" over the,, 'when are you due, next week?', or 'oh twins?' commentary I seem to elicit from random I don't know.
I'm from the south so having strangers say hi, or starting a conversation is nothing new. I appreciate it and say thank you.
Yeah, everyone in my town is super nice. They sometimes ask if I'm going into labor soon, but whatever. They're curious. I get a lot of "bless you for being pregnant in the middle of summer" even though summer hasn't officially started yet. It's already in the upper 90s, so whatevs.
I had a hard time with it at first, too. I was like " um pretty much any living organism can do it..." but now it's just an automatic Thank you. As long as they aren't asking stupid questions like "Who's the Father?" and "Was it intentional?" And YES that happened!
YES! I have had that too -- complete STRANGERS and men at that -- have asked me whether it was planned. WTH?! Who are you to ask that? And what woudl they do if I said no, it was an accident and I am totally devastated by it. Maybe I shoudl try that next time. Seems like fun. People are SOOOO freaking rude and invasive. Though I have not experienced the inappropriate touching much other than an old lady in the gym showers who reached out, touched my belly, and just said: BOY?, while we were both naked. She was right and I was so caught off-guard I just laughed and said yes.
