Nursing covers

I planned on going out on Father's Day and nursing in public for the first time so we could enjoy a nice meal out. I totally chickened out and couldn't do it. I was just going to use a receiving blanket as a cover but I think I may have been more comfortable if I had a nursing cover.

Are there any covers you would recommend? What do you like/dislike about it? I'd like to order one online but I don't know which kind to get.

Re: Nursing covers

  • I have the boppy nursing cover from target. I use it all the time when out and about and really like it.

Personally, I've tried using just a receiving blanket, but DS moves around too much when latching I feel like my boob is out for awhile so the blanket doesn't work.

I have the boppy cover and like it. I've seen double sided clips at buy buy baby that turn any blanket into a nursing cover, which I thought could be cool.

I have an udder cover which I like because it's pretty light-weight and because I can see her easily :)

  • I have a Nuroo nursing scarf and it's pretty awesome. It can be used multiple ways depending on how much coverage you want.

  • I have the Tommy Tippee nursing cover- it was recommended by my SIL who nurses both her kids. She said she likes it the best because it is big so you don't have to worry about becoming uncovered while messing around with the baby. I like that it is easy to see the baby and he doesn't seem to mind it at all. When he falls asleep nursing, I usually use it as a blanket too!

  • Omg I just remembered I seen this online the other day! Not sure i would use that myself
  • I have a coverme. I use it more for keeping a blanket covering baby when wearing her, but it turns any blanket into a nursing cover. I don't bother with a cover anymore unless I'm in church and there are people all around me.

  • Bebe au Lait Muslin. It's actually a few inches bigger than the original, light and breathable but still compete coverage. Plus the neckline allows you to maintain eye contact and make sure baby latches properly.
  • I have an Eddie Bauer nursing cover from Target. It has been nice to have, it looks like an apron so it's pretty obvious that you are breastfeeding when you put it on, so in certain settings, I don't even use it.

Bought mine at coveredgoods.com, it is super soft, and fairly light weight. You can wear it several ways, and even as a scarf and baby seat cover if you need one. Very versatile and I think pretty cute!! Love mine, I bought two!!

It does not have a "peek a boo" style neckline but I can make do without because it doesn't look like a nursing cover.

I have a boppy one but this is so much cuter. Trying to justify ordering one :)
  • I have the nursing scarf too I love it! Definitely recommend it
  • You know those coupons from Destination Maternity (and lots of other places) for the "free" sling, nursing pillow, car seat cover, etc? I used the one for the nursing cover (not sure what brand it is) and I really like it. It covers well, there's a good gap on top so I can see him. I've used it several times and I like it a lot.

  • @LaNorte‌ I still have my coupons but never looked into ordering. How do they work? Is it really free?
  • It is free, but shipping is expensive (like $10-$15) so it's not really "free". I got the nursing cover and the nursing pillow, which is like a small boppy except the cover isn't removable. I keep that one in the nursery for nighttime feedings because it seems to be a bit less bulky and fits in my rocking chair better than the boppy.

  • The "free" uddercover is worth paying the $12 shipping. The Boppy covers at BRU are either $29.99 or $39.99!!! You can use the code more than once just not in same shipment. I ordered 2. One I keep in the diaper bag and the other stays at the house to use when we have company.
  • I didn't buy a cover. I've just been using a swaddle. I tie 2 corners together so it's big enough to slip over my head and BAM! Nursing cover. It's been working so far!
  • I have the udder cover. It's small, but it's fine. I find I often will just drape a blanket over my shoulder and use it to cover up the small slice of boob that shows when I'm nursing. In the hot summer months, I usually do not like to cover Tessa all the way up with a cotton nursing cover. She seems a lot happier when she doesn't have anything over the top of her and I find it's easier to see her that way. I pretty much only use the actual nursing cover when I'm in church or in another situation where I truly do want to remain very private (my 8-person finance meeting this week is a perfect example).
  • I made one for DD2 but haven't even used it this time. I mostly use a A&A blanket if a I need a little coverage, but mostly I just nurse and don't worry. I was not that comfortable w/ my first, though.

They are super, super easy to make and waaaay cheaper if you are handy at all. It probably cost less than $10 could be only a few bucks if you have a fabric stash already.
I'm decent at sewing. Do you have any tips on how to make one?

These are all great suggestions. I wish there weren't so many to choose from.

I've heard this a lot, and don't understand the mentality.   I don't care if people KNOW that I'm breast feeding, I just don't particularly want to show a lot of skin doing it (I'm actually more conscious of my belly than I am of my boobs).
Nursing tanks can help prevent exposed belly
I do wear nursing tanks, and generally only NIP without a cover if I'm wearing one.  But still, I don't understand why people don't want others to know that they are feeding their child.  I don't care how much attention my nursing cover attracts, because I'm...well...COVERED.   People can stare all they want at my nursing cover.  Doesn't bother me.    Certainly won't stop me from nursing with a cover.

  • I have the bebe au lait muslin also, and love it! So lightweight and breathable in this Arizona heat and I like that I can make eye contact and help DS latch.

That said, I'm starting to get tired of covering up. I may end up getting brave enough to NIP without the cover :)

I made mine also and it works great. I also made one of the infinity scarf kind but havent tried it cause it is so hot out. You definitely need to get something cause you should be going out!! Dont let breastfeeding keep you cooped up. Most people dont evennotice when youre feeding and even if they do you're nourishing your baby. Get out
    There mama!
