Still safe to swaddle?

We've been swaddling LO for all of her naps & at night. My MIL put her in the crib today without a swaddle & she rolled from her back to her belly - 1st time. Does this mean I shouldn't swaddle anymore? I've searched & seen a few people say when they can roll to stop - but does that mean if they're rolling in their swaddle? Is it safe to swaddle with one arm out as a transition? Just didn't know if I should stop completely.

It kind of depends on your baby. We swaddled DS1 until he was close to 10 months old because he had an incredibly strong startle reflex and was a light sleeper. He was rolling over by 4 months and crawling at 8 months, so he was mobile when we did this. He didn't really move around once swaddled. With the twins I think we are going to try transitioning out of the swaddle soon because they are wiggling all over in their sleep and I don't want them getting stuck without their arms available.

Some people have gone cold-turkey without the swaddle and some have transitioned with one arm out. We went cold-turkey with DS1 but he was a lot older. You can try starting with one arm out and see how it works for you. Good luck!

  • DS is going on 3 months and he is still swaddled at night.  He started rolling from tummy to back at 4 1/2 weeks and now can go from back to tummy.  He is not breaking out of the swaddle yet.  He is currently still sleeping in the rock-and-play and not his crib.  When ready I will transition him with one arm at a time.
I think if your LO still has a strong startle reflex and/or is not showing signs of wanting to be out of the swaddle, then I don't see the harm.
  • We still swaddle all the time. She's not close to rolling yet, so I can't help there. But she does tend to get at least one hand up towards her mouth from within the swaddle, which is making me think we might start to transition out soon. I'd love for her to sooth herself with her hands, which she seems to be trying to do despite the swaddle. I plan to start with one arm out, then both. I think I"ll start with naps, too, before I mess with her nighttime routine.
