Major TMI - Constipation/Internal Hemorrhoids

Okay ladies, I apologize in advance for the TMI, but I'm waiting for a call back from my doctor and was told that it could be the end of the business day before I get a response.  I'm hoping that in the mean time someone might have some experience or advice.  Or just some words of comfort to calm me the F down.

So...  I haven't had a bowel movement in 4 or 5 days (I really can't remember for sure anymore).  Yesterday, I kept feeling like I really needed to go so I would try and it would feel like the poop was right there but just wouldn't come out.  Finally I felt like it was just hanging out of my bottom, refusing to come out, so I decided I was just going to grab it and pull it out (so gross, I know, but I was feeling pretty desperate).  Much to my surprise, it turns out that there was no poop it was just my entire butt hole turned inside out and pushing out of my bottom.  OMG.  When I stopped pushing it all went back inside.

Long story short, I think that I have internal hemorrhoids that are so swollen that it's not allowing any bowel movements to get through!  Has anyone had this happen, and if so what did your doctor have you do?  I will wait for a call back from my OB before I take any action, but I'm just really feeling freaked out at the moment and hoping for some kind of reassurance.  TIA ladies!

Thank you.  I did take a bath last night after it happened, but never thought to try the blow dryer trick.  I will try that when I get home from work tonight.  Fortunately, I'm not really having any discomfort from the hemorrhoids, it just the constipation that's killing me.  I will make sure to drink as much water as I can today and will up my fruits and veggies.  I appreciate the responses.  I think I'm just feeling sorry for myself, but the idea of my anus being too swollen to allow me to have a bowel movement is really freaking me out.

Ah prunes - I totally forgot about those.  I will definitely get some asap.  Thank you!
  • My doc. recommended Colace.. I've been taking one every now and then and it's helped with getting things moving. Good luck!

  • Have you tried taking Colace? I became so constipated that it caused hemorrhoids. I use witch hazel pads to bring down the swelling. When I got really really constipated for 5-6 days I took 2 Colace and the next day I took an actual laxative (Dulcolax was on my Dr's list of OK meds to take). I felt really sick at first but after I had a bowel movement I finally felt normal again. The Colace helped to soften things up and the Dulcolax moved things along.

I haven't tried taking anything yet.  I've had constipation off and on through out this pregnancy, but it's always corrected itself after a day or two in the past without any intervention from me.  I don't want to take anything without talking to my doctor at this point because I don't want to make things worse if the bowel movement can't get past the hemorrhoids...  Colace is on my list of safe meds though, so I'll be sure to ask my OB about it or the option of taking a laxative when she calls me back.  Thanks!
  • No real advice, just have to say how sorry I am that you are going through this!!! It sounds terrible... do you drink coffee? Usually if i'm having a slow day or two, coffee will make me go. Hope you get some relief!

Thank you.  I haven't had any coffee since I found out I was pregnant, but now might be the time to reintroduce it!

    Colace is your friend.

Wasn't it @ichabody that was impacted? She might have some advice.

Also, I have severe thromobsed external hems (yay! me?) so I'm not 100% versed in internal ones but what you described sounds like a prolapsed rectum to me.

Ditto on the coffee. I don't do caffeine regularly but if things are "slow" some sort of warm coffee beverage usually does the trick.

  • PS. Good luck! To me, GI issues have been the worst aspect of this entire pregnancy.

  • I second coffee.
I'm pretty sure the only reason my insides have behaved so well this pregnancy is that I have one coffee a day around mid morning - usually poop about an hour later and I've yet to have constipation.
I don't do anything else specific for my digestive system like fiber, prunes, digestive aid yogurt/tea so it's either nature or the coffee that's doing this.

  • Been there and I am sooooo sorry!! Scared to death about what will happen with labor now that I had a problem :/ Yay.

  • My doctor said that up to a certain point in pregnancy enemas were safe (ONLY as a last resort and very sparingly), this would be something you would need to clear with your doctor but earlier in my pregnancy I had to take one because there wasn't anything happening and after your stool has been inside you past 3 days it's 100 percent going to be hard.

I'm wondering if you can lube up enough with coconut oil to help ease it out?

I really hope they call you back. I am always very sympathetic to others poop needs.

I have internal hemmys too. No fun.

  • Oh yeah... totally me.  I will never do Zofran again, I don't care how bad the puking gets.  When you consider taking a spoon to your asshole, you know you've got big problems.

Mirolax, Senekot, and glycerin suppositories were my remedies, but none as helpful as just flat out stopping the Zofran.
  • Good to hear!

  • Wash that colace down with a cup of coffee with a spoonful of benefiber mixed into it and you'll be right as rain in no time.

  • Oh! I was just going to say, you can get cocoa butter suppositiries in with a mild painkiller that would probably help but it looks like the moment has passed ('scuse the pun)

    Hopefully you'll be fine soon!
  • One more reason to love coffee!! Glad you made a poop!

  • I just want to say I'm so sorry.  I had an anal fissure postpartum for 11 months (!!!) with my first that was awful and caused spasms and was the most painful non-delivery non-migraine experience of my life:(  I really hope this gets better for ya soon.

Thank you again for all of the responses and support. It really helped!
  • Oh, you poor, poor, poor thing!!!  Glad to hear you were able to go!  I've had some constipation and hemorrhoids, but nothing that bad!  I agree with ghost, it does sound like it could possibly be a prolapsed rectum so I would suggest getting it check out anyway.  Otherwise, I've noticed if I am constipated, upping my fruits and veggies and going easy on the cheese helps a lot.  Prunes are your friend.  Also coffee.  And Tucks.  I never had hemorrhoids before my first pregnancy, but I've learned that staying regular is the most important thing.  Good luck, I hope you don't have this issue again!  Just keep lots of fiber, fruits, and veggies in your diet!

    I feel your pain!

Now that things are moving for you again, I have good luck with: colace once in the am and once in the pm; two table spoons of ground flax mixed into cereal or oatmeal; lots of fresh fruits and veggies; and coffee.
  • I feel your pain - literally. Had constipation & roid issues even before my pregnancy & they're so much worse now - I've got internal ones too really bad. My OB gave me a RX hydrocortisone cream 2 weeks ago but it hasn't helped one bit. I'm drinking tons of water & upping my fiber, but then I have diarrhea instead which irritates the roids even more. I mentioned it again at my appointment on Tuesday (I've been meeting the different docs now since I won't know which one will be on call when baby girl arrives) & this OB said there's not much else I can do & my bi-polar BMs are hormone-related. He said putting my feet up more might help them drain (though he may have moved on to talking about my ankles at that point?). I was told that suppositories & laxatives are not safe during pregnancy. I may end up trying a stool softener once I'm done working (my last day is July 3) - I really fear taking it & then having loud explosive diarrhea at the office.

Can't win right now - food doesn't want to go in or out of my body lately. I keep telling myself that baby girl is worth it, though.

I'm so incredibly sorry to hear that you're dealing with these issues too! Our babies are worth it, but it doesn't make it an easier or anymore fun to deal with. Good luck to you! My OB is going to check me at my 37 week appointment to see if it's prolapsed, but hopefully things won't get worse again before then.
  • So, I know it's not a problem for you anymore but I totally second eating raisins. Also, I know dairy and lettuce (veg in general) can help to move things along. Had this issue earlier in pregnancy and ended up at the advice of my doc having to send my poor husband out to buy enemas. So not fun but a necessity at that point. I was literally in tears and just stuck! Since then, I take Miralax three times a week. Mix into your drink and it really does help. My doc said don't do it every day bc your body can start to rely on it but that 3-4 times a week can really help.
Wishing all you ladies some true relief!
  • I agree with everyone on Colace. Since I went on bed rest 8 weeks ago I've been backed up because of lack of exercise. I started taking 2 colace a day or every other day, plus started eating Danon Activia Yogurt. Seemed to help a little.

This last bit might be TMI, but this trick has helped the most: I noticed that it is much easier to pass a hard stool if I massage grape seed oil around and a little bit inside my hole whenever I felt that I had to go. Don't know if that would be approved by doctors, but I figured since DH and I use grape seed oil in that area when we have anal sex (not that that has happened in a long while!), it would be safe to use to help lubricate the area to pass hard stool.

This has been a life saver. In the beginning, just using stool softener, I was passing streaks of blood every time I went, leaving me to believe I had some internal hemorrhoids. Ever since I started using the oil, I have been regular, no hard straining, and no blood. I don't know if you should use the oil on the hemorrhoids, though. I did, but mine weren't too bad. But if you want, you could always use Prep H on it until they go away, then use oil. Just my two scents.

Glad you finally got some release!

  • So glad to hear you finally got relief!  I had an impacted bowel about a month ago.  And, I was able to get it all moving.  But, when mentioned to my doctor she said that if its happened once, it will very likely happen again if you don't change your habits in some way... baby is only getting bigger and crushing your bowels more and more.

Since then, I take 2 stool softeners a day.  I also have a fruit shake every morning with probiotic yogurt, prune juice, and benefiber in it.  I went a week without the shakes and things immediately started to get bad again.  I took miralax over 2 nights and that got things moving and I am back on the fruit shakes religiously.  I also eat a lot of fruit as snacks now.  I have never cared more about poop in my entire life!!

Hopefully you can continue to go!

  • I'm 38+2 & was bawling this morning over these damned hemorrhoids. I tried to explain to DH how bad it is but then I heard him puking when he went to shower before work, which made me just feel awful. He was hugging me earlier though & telling me it'd be okay since my OBs didn't seem concerned (they pretty much told me there's not much I can do about it right now). Mine are internal prolapsed & I have to push them back in every time I sit on the toilet which is a little painful now (TMI I know). I tried to go back to sleep for a bit without doing so & I was in so much pain from them being squeezed by my bottom. If I don't do so, I can't do anything - sit, walk, lie down, etc. I'm worried that the birthing process will only make them worse (increased pressure from LO has been doing that all along already) & that I'll need surgery to correct/remove them. I use Tucks every time to soothe them & the RX hydrocortisone the OB gave me to minimize itching (& ease them back in). Sorry ladies for the rant - I'm just freaked out today & needed to vent about it.

  • You poor thing. :( I'll echo the others that Colace is awesome...used that quite a bit this pregnancy, and it's kept the poo trains from stopping too long at the stations and keeps 'em on schedule. I actually haven't taken it the past 2 weeks because now I'm getting the opposite problem. ...and did anyone else have their "Leave a Reply" box freak out and become super tiny?

@ADC1979‌ I actually haven't been constipated for a while. In fact it's been closer to the opposite the past few days (I feel your pain there). So I can poop, it's just no fun since the roids pop out every time & I have to spend the extra time wiping very gently & thoroughly (thank God for Tucks!). I'm constantly drinking water & making sure I'm eating right (fiber) & have stool softeners in the cabinet if I need them. But even with all this, they're still getting worse, hence why I'm so freaked that I'll need surgery.

I'm on mobile so I didn't see anything weird with the Leave a Reply box.
