I picked option #2.  LO babbles dada (his current favorite), mama, nana, baba, and other random sounds.  Sometimes I think he knows what dada means, but other times I feel like everything is dada to him. I don't think he knows the meaning of any of the other words though.

He does understand a lot of the things we say to him, though, like "come here," "say hi/bye," "no," etc.

LO babbles all the time. There are lots of mamas and some dadas. I still can't tell if he means them for sure. We also thought he was saying book for a while, but that seems to have vanished. He's 11 months.

Eta: he understands quite a few words, though. Up, down, head, foot, walk, book, open, shut, jump, bounce, bang.

LO just started saying his first word with meaning a few days before his first birthday - ball.

He babbles mama and dada (and all sorts of other sounds) all the time, and seems to babble mama more often when he's upset and probably wants mama, but since it still gets lost in the babbling, I don't really count it yet.

ETA: daycare is convinced that LO is speaking some kind foreign language because he "talks" ALL.THE.TIME with them.  He has all kinds of back and forth "conversations", you just can't understand his end of them ;-)

  • He says "hi". I love it! He was saying it to everyone he saw at the doctors office today. :)

He also babbles all the time.

She babbles and squeals ALL the time, but says only three words with meaning. Dada, mama, and dog. All four-legged creatures are dogs, although I'm trying to teach her cat since we have two (it is super confusing to her because my ILs have a dog who is the same size as our cats).

ETA: She is 12.5 months old.

one word - Dog. he knows the meanings of other words - like clap, wave, nose, eye, belly - but he won't say them.

    ETA he's 1 year 1 week.

  • Dd is very chatty.  Total opposite of her brother, who spent over a year in speech therapy.  (He won't shut up now!)

She has about 20-30 real words including: mama, dada, "da" (Quinn), Ellie (our dog), hi, bye, hot dog (Mickey Mouse), apple, cheese, banana, wa-wa (water), yo-yo (yogurt), ni-ni (nighty night), all done, ball, baby, duh (duck), uh-oh, out (outside).

She's started to repeat some things back to us like Happy Birthday, I'm ready, and Hi Ladies (daycare workers at the gym), but I don't think she attaches meaning to those phrases.

  • I put 4, but then I thought about it and she says 5. She says Hi, Daddy, Mama, Baba and Cat/Kitty Cat.

  • Owen knows mama and dada. He for sure knows the meaning.
Last night my husband woke me up after he was watching Owen for a bit and he asked me " babe, can Owen talk? " uhhh.... No! " I swore he said bye bye, but it didn't sound like I would say it. It was Def. A baby bye bye." Mmk, babe. " whatever. He can talk!"

I'm not sure that's 'talking', but OK.

  • @WesternDiva‌ @heelibrarian‌ This is us too. DD says "Hi" to everyone. Us, other family members, animals, people on the street, kids on the playground. And she'll repeat it until she gets an answer.

She mostly babbles but says No (and shakes her head) and refers to us as Mameh and Da, even though we refer to SO as Papa so we dont know where 'Da' came from. She kind of hums 'uhoh'. She also makes a "woof" sound whenever she sees any type of animal.

She understands Hello, goodbye, arms up (when taking off a shirt), "can momma/papa have that?", and no (but usually doesnt obey).

She'll be one on the 25th.

  • Can we count "yay" as a word? Well, I did. KJ says yay while clapping at the end of every song, hi while waving and dada. She says bye but it sounds like dye. She also says yeah and yes. Sometimes with meaning and sometimes not. She understands a lot of words and commands.

  • N knows a lot of words but doesn't talk much. She only says mama and dada but she knows what they mean. She does babble like crazy though!
  • One year and some change- knows/says with meaning about 6 words:

    Cat
    Dog
    Mama
    Dada
come (when he used to yell at the dog to come inside)
    wow

Oh and he knows how to say "GOOOAALL" in honor of the World Cup - but only says it if we say it first and I am sure he has no idea what it means.

    Three words here.

    Mama
    Dada
    More

She uses mama when she's sad or angry. Dada when she's happy. And more for everything else.....in context when she's eating or pointing at something she wants. She babbles in her sleep but not so much when awake.
