Benjamin.....

Ok, I posted not too long ago about the names Benjamin Edgar and Benjamin Cash. Well DH decided on Benjamin Jace, I was perfectly ok with this... until DH's mom was talking about a boy she went to school with had the initials BJ and was picked on. I went to school with a guy everyone called BJ but he went with it, it never bothered him (His name was Matt, no idea where BJ came from). Do you think that's an obvious nickname? I know I have to be annoying my husband because I'm not big on his name picks, I did like this. But I don't want him to get picked on.Would you stick with it? Any middle name suggestions? We want something short. Thanks ladies, I'm probably bugging you all too lol.

Re: Benjamin.....

  • I think there is a possibility of him being picked on for it, but kids will find anything to tease someone about. If you guys like it, go with it!

Agreed. I knew a BJ, but it was because he had two first names, not because of his middle name. Generally, kids don't know anyone else's middle names.

  • I have a friend named Brandon James and he has always gone by BJ.  In the 15 years I have known him, I have never heard anyone make fun of it or heard him complain about it.  Unless the kids call him "Blow Job" I don't think it would be an issue- especially since by the time kids are old enough to know what a blow job is, your Benjamin will be old enough to punch them in the jaw- and that would end that.

I don't think the middle name will come up often enough for it to be an issue.  But if it's concerning you (which I don't think it should!), what about Chase?  Same sound, different letters?
  • My moms initials are BJ. She was actually called that. Nbd.

Kids will pick on kids no matter what, unfortunately.

Also, kids don't usually talk middle names.

  • ...Buttons!  Sorry I felt like it was word association until I read :)

So DH's first and middle make "BJ" for which he was tormented in school for many years.  As mentioned in my name pick post a few weeks ago, we are most likely doing a Jr. but are specifically coming up with a nickname to offset the potential "job" connotation from jump.

Also for reference apparently the preference tease is to call the kid "Beej".  Poor thing :)

I think BJ would become an obvious nickname if there are multiple Ben/Bejnamins in the class and the teacher starts writing his name as "Ben J." - in that instance you will probably have some smart mouth kid that would put 2+2 together and get BJ.  Otherwise, I think initials as nicknames originate in the home rather than school setting.

But, Jace just reminds me of Janelle from 16 & Pregnant.  *shudder*
All of this. Also, as PP said, most kids don't know each others' middle names. I think it would only be an obvious NN if your last name started with J, which I'm assuming it doesn't. With all that said, I went to high school with a BJ and he was very popular and no one ever made fun of his name. Short answer? Not a big deal, IMO.

Kids these day will find the dumbest things to make fun of others.

Oh your name starts with an "S"??
Oh let's make fun of you! :-q

Stick with the name! I like it!!
  • The only BJ I knew was a Benjamin. His middle name had nothing to do with it, just the spelling of 'B'en'J'amin. That said, he didn't really get made fun of because it's no fun to tease someone that just lets comments roll off their back.
  • I didn't see a problem with the nickname because I honestly didn't know what else BJ stood for. DH and I have nn's that only our family use. Maybe it will be like that for him. I didn't know anyone's mn until graduation day and it was on the program.

  • I never think "blow job" when I hear BJ, but of course I'm not a 10-year-old boy. I'd say it's a definite possibility that he would be teased, and if that's something you would like to try to avoid, choose a different mn.

However, not too many people will know his mn, so it may never come up.

Am I the ONLY person who immediately thinks of BJ Honeycutt from M*A*S*H when you hear "BJ"? That's truly the first thought that comes to my mind...handsome army doc. :P

  • I would only see it as a problem if your last name started with a J. Then he'd probably be BJ at some point. I don't think it'd necessarily become a problem if the J comes from his middle name.

  • We are having this exact same problem!  We are going to name our son Beckham and wanted Jace as the middle name... however our last name already gets lots of jokes since it has "Wood" in it (yes our friends are super immature). So we've axed all "J" middle names from our list.

I really like Benjamin Cash. We've thought about Chase, since it sounds similar to Jace. But we are still debating also.
  • My husbands initials are BJ, but first and last name. He said kids came up with the BJ name in middle school but he wasn't the type to be picked on much so he just laughed it off. It wasn't funny pretty quickly. That being said, I think the middle name being a J would be way less of an issue. In my experience, middle school boys don't really get into finding out others middle names. I say don't let it stop you. I think Benjamin Jace is a great name!!
