Sides of head flatness?

So my little nugget has what appears to be a flattening sides of her head- she falls one way or the other sometimes when she's swaddled...am I supposed to be doing something to avoid this? Could I sound more clueless? I feel like it's one thing after another that I didn't know lately! And by lately I mean the last 7 weeks and 6 days!

Re: Sides of head flatness?

  • Mine does too. Doc said to switch sides when doing diaper changes, placing in the crib, etc. and some gentle neck stretching.

  • There's a hat called Tortle that can help that. Not sure if it will help my LO. His head is all sorts of wonky.

When my DH puts baby down to sleep at night he always puts her head at the same end and when I put her down after the motn feeding I do the opposite in an attempt to even it out. Also I have been really trying to do tummy time three times a day to give her some time off of her head. I'm hoping this avoids the flatness and so far seems to be doing well!
  • Ds had this a little bit when he was a baby. Switch sides when laying her down, tummy time when awake. His was fixed just by doing those things.

  • I knew the flatness was bad on his left side of the head. The problem is i will put his head on the one side at night but then he move back to the other side! When the doctor saw it at his 2 month appointment, she said during the day to lay on the other side and show him toys on that side. Also, tummy time of course. He really favors that side but i am trying my best!

  • Yeah we need more tummy time- she HATES it though, so were carrying her a ton. so I was thinking that would help with her neck strength, but I guess it's her head that needs attention too! It's just sleeping- wondering if there is a way to hold her straight during sleep?

Did your pedi check her neck muscles? DD1 was the same way, I would try to move her head gently to the other side and she always moved it back to the same position. She had torticollis (tight neck muscles) and had to start physical therapy at 2 months old (once a month, basically just working on stretches for me to do with her at home). It worked great and she avoided a helmet but was in PT until 13 months old to help strengthen those muscles.
