leap pad ?

DH and I have talked about getting K a leap pad for her birthday. She likes to watch videos and play baby apps on my Kindle and my phone. However, I am seeing they say ages 4+. Do any of your kiddos have these ? Do they like them ? Zulily has them super on sale today, but I am hesitating pulling the trigger. Andplusalso, what is the difference between the 2 and the ultra ?

Re: leap pad ?

  • I don't have a ton of knowledge about the different leap-pads, but we have the Innotab (VTech's version of the leap pad).

My 4 year old plays with it a lot and we bought it for him when he was 3.  I'd say it's a little early for them to get full value out of it, but she'll grow into it, so if it is a good enough value, it might be worth it.

DS2 doesn't know how to navigate it at all, but he doesn't play games on our phones yet either.  The thing about the leappads/innotabs is that they're a little bit slower than a typical iPad or phone. When DS1 was younger he would get a little impatient when it was loading.

James got a LeapPad2 for his third birthday from the Grandparents. It wasn't something I would have bought but it does come in handy for road trips or airplanes. He does still need help playing a lot of the games correctly. One that came with the LeapPad that he plays a lot has trivia questions and he has to pick the flag for a country or a native animal for that country. He is starting to memorize them but he is 3.5. Leo would have no clue. When Leo does get his hands on it, he just bangs the stylist into the screen hitting whatever buttons are on at the time.

So, I would wait. No reason for the kid to get bored with a toy before they can even use it properly.

  • My boys are 5 and 6yrs old and they didn't start enjoying and understanding their Leapster and Leap Pad2 until about a year ago.  They eat energizer batteries like a SOB so I recommend re-chargable batteries.  But they are very into the learning games and they are awesome on road-trips.  Dex likes playing with the camera on them right now, but that about it.

  • I bought one for N at Costco the other day because it was such a good deal. I figured I would look more into it before opening it. It's still sitting in the box. I bought because I wanted it for road trips/flights/restaurants etc.

My sister's daughter who just turned 2 loves it and can do a bunch of the games on her own. I think N would enjoy it, but not really sure if it's worth it. The apps (you can download them straight off the website) and games (buy cartridges to go into the game) are expensive. I think the average is $10-15. I would rather use that money and buy a few more apps for the ipad that he can use.

Yeah, the Jake game was $25 for the app version. I bought the cartridge for $16.

  • My kids love it. My s12-er doesn't have her own leappad, but the other kids have one each and she loves playing with it. I say yes. But don't be surprised if it takes a few months to really see any actual "playing", instead of just moving the "pen".
