Night weaning a stubborn babe

DD sleeps in a size car attached to our bed, and up until a week ago, rolled over and nursed whenever she wanted. For multiple reasons, now that I'm pregnant, we decided to night-time wean.

I nurse her at 7:30 - right before bed - and again in the morning, but we don't nurse in bed at all anymore. The first few nights, she cried several times throughout the night which we expected. She still fuses from 4am on, though, and it's been nine days. We pat her back and snuggle and she settles down, but it happens every thirty minutes or so.

Any advice? Or at least any idea of when this might end? Mama needs sleep!

  • She never took a bottle, but we do have a water cup in her crib that I tried to offer her. She just slaps it and pulls my shirt.

She may be more opinionated and stubborn that I am. It's terrifying.

  • Ugh - I don't BF so this isn't about weaning from the breast but from the overnight bottle.  He should NOT need to eat overnight but he's skinny and when he wakes he seems to be starving so I'm struggling with this.  He woke up to eat twice last night and he sucked down several ounces each time.  I'm just commiserating lol

  • Nine days is a long time but I think that these things take longer when they are older. I think you just need to hold on and maybe another week or so she will have stopped. As long as you are close to her she will that expectation. How much longer will she be sleeping next to you in bed?

Yeah we tried moving her to DH's side, but he can't sleep with her next to him. I'm not sure how long she's going to stay in there - we never really intended to bedshare when we started, and we don't really have an end game... I became significantly crunchier than I expected to :-/

  • I am thinking this might be a lot easier if she has her own sleeping space. Have you seen how she does in her own room and crib?

  • I think it would be too, but I don't have the heart to let her cry it out :/ We have tried different forms of it, and it never resulted in actual sleep in the crib. It sounds like I think my kid is a special snowflake, and I know she's not, but we have too many battles for me to put sleeping in another room back on the list. These are all great suggestions - hopefully we'll get somewhere productive soon...

  • we still bed share and LO still rolls over and nurses when he wants as well.  We never really intended on this happening, but it just happened so we could all get some sleep.  I tried him in his crib about two weeks ago and it ended in him crying alllllll night long. I couldn't take it another night...so here we are..still co-sleeping.  I brought it up at his 1 year and his pedi said if I am happy, and he is happy, then just let it be for now. But I would love to cut back on his night feedings soon.  Wow, sorry for rambling...just wanted to let you know you are not alone! :)
  • I'm not ready to tackle night-weaning, so I'm not much help, but since you are still kind of having a family bed situation going on - Jay Gordon's article might be helpful to you:

Thank you :) I get embarrassed that we bed share still but it works well for us and we really enjoy it. And I read that Jay Gordon article a while back and forgot about it. It's actually similar to what we are doing, so maybe the extra structure us all we need!

  • Don't be embarrassed that you still bed share!! Grayson and I still share a bed and we both love it. I don't have the heart to make him CIO because he always made himself sick. We don't even have his crib up anymore. We'll be cosleeping until he's ready to sleep in his own bed. I became crunchier than I thought I would too! Lol
