Follow up milk question

Since we're talking milk...

You start with whole milk, right? So when can toddlers start with the low fat milk?

Everywhere you go with milk as a offered beverage it seems to be low fat milk.

It's my understanding the low fat milk isn't harmful, it just doesn't have all the milk fat and proteins that are still beneficial.

I've been reading up a lot today, and lower fat milks can be started after the age of 2.  My nieces (almost 2 and 3.5) are both on whole milk still and LEAN.  :-)  If you have no choice sometime you're out and about, I'm guessing its not much of an issue...just wouldn't make a habit of lwoer fat milks.

  • There's also some proof that lower fat dairy doesn't have the nutrients that full fat dairy has.

DD1's pedi just recently recommended 2%, so the switch really depends on the kid.

  • At 2, our doc told us we could switch to 2% if we wanted. We did only because that's what we drank. He has mostly 1% now and he is a perfectly normal weight.
  • We were told we could switch at 2, bur we drink whole milk in our household anyway. I don't worry about milk that the kids get from other places being low fat since the majority of the time they are drinking their milk at home, and low fat milk is a far better choice than the Coke my MIL is always offering to them!
