Pools and end of pregnancy

My mom asked me today at what point I had to stop getting in the pool before August 6. I had no idea what she was talking about but she was under the impression that you aren't supposed to get in pools in late pregnancy. Maybe you're not supposed to after your water breaks? Is this a thing anyone has heard of? DS1 and go to the neighborhood pool we belong too almost every afternoon.

I haven't heard anything either. I will be beaching my whale self in the pool until I pop. I'm hot yo.

The only thing I've ever heard is to be careful after your water breaks. But typically if your water breaks, they admit you to the hospital at that point so I don't think it comes up much. My midwives group encouraged swimming especially in late pregnancy as a low impact form of exercise that can help muscles and joints feel better and relieve pressure.

The only thing I've read about pools and pregnancy is once your water breaks you shouldn't go in a pool, the ocean, or a bath (shower instead) because of the increase risk of infecting the amniotic fluid. And also the obvious, don't drink the pool water! haha!

I agree with PP, I feel like some of my athlete friends who swim were swimming until they went into labor/their waters broke. But it never hurts to ask

I know my IL's have a pool and I was concerned in the end about my water breaking while I'm swimming (so unlikely but it just grosses me out).

Ok, I was just assuming about the water breaking thing so I'm glad to hear that's the reason. I'm having a RCS so I will be on the way to the hospital if my water breaks, not floating in a pool!

I swelled a lot at the end of my last pregnancy so I plan to be submerged daily if I can because I know it's supposed to help!

LOL my 3 year old is so busy smiling and laughing in the pool that he never closes his mouth and then chokes on water so I make it a point to exaggerate keeping my mouth closed!

I was thinking in case your water breaks, but not necessarily to protect you, but other people... like you could contaminate the pool, maybe?

The pool is the only place where I feel relief now. It is so nice to float around and not feel like everything hurts and I weigh 1,000 lbs. No way I'm giving that up!

My MIL also had this concern. She told us that her pool would be open after fathers day and that we could come swim whenever, but I had to get a raft to lay on…I was confused and she looked at me and said, "I don't know, are you allowed in a pool?!" Uh…you had 4 kids…you didn't know that pools were perfectly safe during pregnancy? Lol. I only think there is an issue once your water breaks, but who the heck is going for a leisurely swim when they are possibly in labor? Lol

Someone asked me this same question the other day. According to my doctor its fine to go in until your water breaks, after that you risk infection. She also said until then, its really good to go swimming bc it helps with swelling.

I've been doing mommy and me classes the last two weeks. Even told my ob about it and he said it was good for both of us. My biggest fear would be water breaking in the pool. How would ya know? For the record the nurses broke mine last time so I have no idea what it's like.

Ha. We recently moved and have a pool now. (yay!) When we saw SO's grandma at our baby shower she said "How nice SO will get great use of the pool this summer". Of course, I chimed in with "what about me?!" and she went on this big rant about how I can absolutely not go swimming until after the baby is born. According to her, it is bad for the baby. I still have no idea why.

My OB has not said a word to me about staying out of pools. I just assumed she was a crazy old lady but now this post has me wondering? I guess it can't hurt to ask. Until then, you bet your ass my enormous pregnant self is getting in that pool!

My water broke in the hospital after I'd been on Cervadil for awhile so I would have no idea if it broke in the pool. It came out in a pretty good gush at the hospital so maybe I'd think I peed myself in the pool? LOL I don't know but I'm definitely not worrying about it!

This must be one of those generational things from a time when pregnancy was treated more like an illness.
