Sleeping on vacation: wwyd

Hi all! We're currently visiting my mom in Hawaii and have now been here 2 nights with 8 more to go...we have a pack n play set up in LOs own room. The first night she slept in it from 8:00-1:30, then 2:00-3:30 and refused to go back in it and slept on me nursing until 6:45...she also refuses to go in it for a nap, even if I try to put her down after she's knocked out...last night she slept from 7:30-4:00, and refused to go back in it and slept on me until 6:00...we are 3 hours behind our normal time, so I'd say she's adjusting to the time change pretty well. My instinct is telling me not to push napping in the pack n play or putting her back down in it in the MOTN because she's in a strange environment...at home I would just leave the room and she'd cry/fuss for 5-10 min and fall asleep...wwyd? Will I create bad habits on a 10 night stay if I let her nap on me and sleep after her early morning wake up on me? TIA!

Re: Sleeping on vacation: wwyd

  • Do what works for you. When we went to Cyprus my baby gal did not sleep in her new crib the first 3 nights (out of the 15) and instead slept in the bed with us. Then she decided she liked the crib. When we travel we often keep her in the bed with us because she generally hates sleeping in pack and plays. It takes her about 1-2 nights to adjust when we're back home but then she's fine. So sure you may create a bad habit for a day or two but it shouldn't be too hard to get her back into a routine when you're home.

Our LO did not sleep the same way she does at home when we were on our week long vacation (no time change). She slept in a pack and play and would be up at least once during the night, usually about 2 hours after we put her down for the night. She's nurse again and would eventually fall asleep on me and I'd put her back in the pack n play. She is usually a very good sleeper, sleeping anywhere from 10-12 hours straight at night so even one wake up is not the norm for her. When we got back home she went right back to her normal sleeping pattern and all is well.

I'm not sure if you've done this or not but I would recommend buying (now or for future use) the pack n play foam mattress, it's a lot more comfortable then the standard one that comes with it. It's very similar to our LO's crib mattress which I think helped her with the transition. It was around $35 on amazon.
