Eeeerrr (Trigger Warning: Child death mentioned)

My cousin posted a link about a father leaving his kid in the hot car while he went to work. I calmly said that unfortunately this is not new so it is a good idea to put your wallet or phone in the backseat. Especially if it is not in your routine to drop the kid off. I do this even though I do not believe I could ever forget my child. Now I am a bad parent, because my phone and wallet is more important then my kid. Lovely.

  • Ugh!  I hate this misconception.  It is all about habits.

That was an obnoxious answer from your cousin.

I would send her this in response (BTW- it won the 2010 Pulitzer):
    Awesome. Thanks!

This is not something that is done on purpose and these parents paid the ultimate price for this mistake. The condescending and judgemental remarks are just irritating.

  • Just a warning for anyone about to read the link above: it contains graphic descriptions of children dying and what they went through when they died. I read the story when it came out and STILL cannot get the images out of my head. Read with caution.

What kind of logic is that?!

    People are stupid.

Now that DD is a bit older, I have her bottle bag for daycare in the front passenger seat with me.  It's hard to grab your purse and not notice bottles sitting on top of it.

The hotter it gets outside the more paranoid I get about it.  I've shared this fear with DH, and I've told him about the stories where schedules change and children get forgotten.  I think talking about it with him helps.

  • I made DH read that article. It's a big fear of mine especially since he isn't used to dropping off/picking up DD at daycare and will be handling it while I'm in the hospital. He was so upset with me that I thought he was a bad parent etc... when the majority of the time it happens because of a change in schedule. He works construction so a lot of times he goes to a different site every day and with DD's car seat in the middle you could easily walk by without seeing her in there. I'll be calling or texting him each morning after drop off.
  • All the grocery stores/Walmart have a warning about checking for your kid before entering the store. I think these are fantastic especially for those parents who don't usually take their kids to the store. Mine is always screaming to get out of his seat, but I could see a parent/caregiver forgetting for many reason especially if the child were being quiet/fell asleep.

  • As an added precaution : ask your child care provider to call you if you don't drop the baby off by x o'clock.

Its sad that Im to the point in my career where I dont even flinch reading articles like that. I once had to read a very graphic description of how the human body burns... To the point of being able to play it through in my head.
We have had quite a few instances where children an infants were left in vehicles. Fortunately, with raised awareness, the fatality rate has dropped off in recent years
