Am I crazy? *new question below*

E slept like crap last night, was up several times, ran a high fever all night (103-104), and was still off when he got up this morning. So I called the dr and made an appointment. I wasn't sure if maybe he had an ear infection?

Now, he's playing in the living room like normal. He has had only one glass of juice in over 12 hours, and won't eat anything. That is completely NOT normal.

He was still running a temp of 101.9 this morning and I gave him some Tylenol when he got up at 9:15. He then laid on the kitchen floor and sobbed until I was finished mixing the juice and could pick him up again. Is this just the Tylenol kicking in? Should I cxl the Dr apt? This kid is confusing the hell out of me.

    I'd definitely take him in.

ETA: Actually, that's a lie. I'd tug gently on his ears to see how he responds, and if he acted like they hurt, I'd pop a couple garlic cloves in there. I'd also let him run around nekkid (ok, just a diaper), to help bring the fever down. I'd also be pushing fluids like a mad woman.

But I don't think you're crazy for taking him in lol

  • I'm praying it's not HFM, because those are the classic signs, including the loss of appetite.  Keep your eyes out for a rash.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Watch for spots because ours came exactly 2 days after the fever.

  • OK, we just say the Dr. He does have an ear infection however, we were advised NOT to start the antibiotics right away! Have you ever heard that??

  • It just blew my mind that he was telling me to wait. E has only had one ei before, but my sister and I both have hearing loss from scar tissue from excessive ear infections. When we were little, we ended up with drs who wouldn't put in tubes. Poor baby just seems so miserable. His fever was down, but had spiked again, and we still have a couple of hours before he can get the next dose of Tylenol.

Just a thought on the fever spiking before the next dose....

When my son gets a fever, I alternate Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 4 hours and that keeps his fever down.  Otherwise, it'll spike about an hour before I can give the next dose.  You could give that a shot, it might help him be more comfortable.  Hope he gets feeling better!

  • That's what I have been doing @lipglossandblack‌ . :( My regular pedi said to alternate Tylenol and motrin every three hours (which puts each at the six hour dosage spacing) until the fever breaks. But he had Tylenol at 9:30 and Motrin at 12:30. Now at 1:40, his fever is back up to 102 (it started the morning at 101.5 at 9:30 this morning).

  • No drops, just the antibiotic. Which I haven't filled yet. I will this afternoon, but I was so hot and hungry coming out of the clinic, I felt sick, so I came home.

  • So... Don't think I'm waiting any longer. :( Poor baby's fever is back up to 104.8. On Tylenol and Motrin. He is so miserable and I just feel so terrible. :'(

  • You can always call the doc back and tell them the fever spiked and see what they suggest.

My older two rarely ever get an antibiotic for an ear infection but my youngest has to have something or it turns into an asthma attack and who knows what else every.single.time.  I hate seeing him on so many meds.

I almost cancelled his last appointment because he started feeling better,  I was so thankful I didn't because he was a pretty sick kid.  I mentioned it to the front office staff and they said to always keep the appointment because almost every time parents regret it by bedtime and wind up calling back the next day for another appointment.

I just called back. They said get the antibiotic. In fact the nurse sounded upset when I told her that the pharmacy said it wouldn't be ready until tonight. They also wanted me to keep with the Tylenol and Motrin, as well as the cool baths — e hated that one. He also said to come back on Friday.

  • DS had roseola last month (and has had HFM in the past too). Both have very similar early symptoms - high fever, lifeless, no appetite, fussy, etc. the only difference is once the fever broke. With roseola, DS just had a rash that didn't bother him in the least. But HFM turned into lessions that still impacted his desire to eat/drink. He was still miserable once the fever broke.

I hate when kids are sick. :(
