82 degrees.. Wwyd?

It's hottt in our house. Our room is the only one with AC (built in unit). We're looking into getting more window units or even installing central air but haven't yet. It's currently 82 degrees in LO's room.. I have windows open and ceiling fan but temp hasn't changed in 2 hours. Should I bring her into our room with some AC? Or is she okay in her room? (She's only wearing a very light onesie and swaddled in very light blanket).

Note I plan on giving pedi a call to get her view on acceptable sleeping temps but it's after hours here now..

Re: 82 degrees.. Wwyd?

  • I'd bring LO into the cooler room. LO is miserable in a hot car.

At least strip to a diaper.
  • Loading the player...
  • I've heard 70-75 degrees is best (according to our pedi). I'm sure if there's circulating air it's okay, but I'd bring LO into the cooler room just to be sure.

I agree with @dani+california‌ there are babies in Africa that sleep in hotter than that. Fan plus stripped to diaper should be fine.

  • DH and I are having the same problem now. We live on the 3 rd floor of an apartment building and it's hot up here even with air conditioning. We have been worrying if lo is too hot.

  • We co sleep Blake wears pajamas and my house is 80. He's cold without his pajamas because he Has no blanket won't stay swaddled. But it would bring the baby in the cooler room!! We go to the coolest room through out te day I feel like we play musical rooms lol

I've kinda been on this same train. It's not 80 here yet at night but is during the day. We don't have ac and while we plan on installing a window unit we haven't yet...that being said I just plan on putting baby in pajamas and keeping a fan on, windows and doors open for circulation.

As long as baby isn't sweating I think she's fine. They say to dress them to sleep in what you'd wear plus a layer. So if warm maybe footless pjs and if hot then a onsie. If 90's and New England humidity then just a diaper!
  • It was 80-82 in our LO's room at bedtime last week, and we broke down and got an air conditioning unit for his room.  It can cool his room down pretty quickly, so we really only run it for maybe an hour before his bedtime to cool things down.  It's cool enough at night here that we usually turn it off when we go to bed.   I'm so glad that we did this, because we can stop the constant temp monitoring and worrying about how hot it is.  It was honestly becoming a daily obsession with us.  I wish we'd bought the a/c earlier and saved ourselves a few weeks of worrying.

If an a/c unit is out of your budget, then try getting a few fans (if you haven't already), and keep dressing LO lightly like you have been doing.  You can even strip her down to a diaper and a light swaddle.

  • Cooler room for sure! Just because African babies live in hotter climates doesn't mean you necessarily have to do it too. Plus, babies who live in perpetually hot climates adjust over time, whereas babies who live in climates that get hot and cold might not be able to tolerate the heat quite as well. AC is a great perk and you're fortunate to have it, so use it when you can!
  • I'd bring baby into the cooler room.  Higher temperatures/overheating have been linked to cases of SIDS and that's something I'm not willing to risk.  Babies are notorious for having trouble regulating their own temperature and (just food for thought) African babies aren't typically left  *alone* in that kind of heat, they are worn or co-sleeping.
