Doggy Update Update - Biopsy results

**Biopsy results in comments**

I posted a couple weeks ago about our dog having a mass under her shoulder blade. It was originally thought she had an injury, but a second round of x-rays showed the mass.

She had her specialist visit today and he did a biopsy. We won't know for sure until later this week, but he believes it's a soft tissue tumor and if biopsy confirms it needs to be removed since most are malignant. Best case after removing the shoulder tissue is her leg is wonky, worst is she losses the whole leg. Estimated cost - around $3k (in addition to the the nearly $1k we've spent already on these appointments)

This comes the day before we go for M's orthotics follow up to determine if we need to go forward with the helmet. That is estimated around $4k.

So please think happy thoughts for puppy that this thing can come out and she recovers well, and maybe a few for us that we survive our new diet of ramen and balogna :(

Re: Doggy Update Update - Biopsy results

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I'm hope everything turns out to be ok.

As for the helmet we are in the same situation. We have to pay at least $2500 out of pocket and wait for the insurance to decide if they will cover the rest. If not it will be $3000 out of pocket. We move forward this week as soon as insurance gets papers done.

Happy thoughts to you and your family.

  • Hope your pup gets better and hoping for good results on the biopsy
  • Update - Riley's biopsy came back. She has a low grade (stage 1) soft tissue sarcoma. Prognosis is very good as long as they remove the tumor with wide, clean margins. They think they have a good chance of removing it and sparing her leg.

The big hurdle now is financial. We don't have 3k for the surgery. Our Munchkin's care has to come first obviously. We're sitting down this weekend to take a seriously look at finances and try to figure this thing out. I'm also seeking the opinion of our regular vet to see if this is something they can handle since they are significantly cheaper and I'm contacting the nearby vet school to see if they would be interested in taking her on as a teaching surgery.

  • Good luck!!! Glad to read that it seems like a best case scenario! Hope the reg vet can do it and save you so money!

Awww, huge hugs blue_elle. I am so sorry you are faced with this right now. Sending lots of positive thoughts and vibes that you are able to get the procedure done at a lower cost and they are able to get the tumor out. It is so hard when faced with these types of decisions with our furbabies. I'll be thinking of you and Riley.
