Formula Feeding MOTN

DS is 10 weeks and goes to bed about 7:30-8. He is formula fed and still waking 2x middle of night. Last night was midnight and 3 then woke for day at 7AM. He guzzled 5 ounces each feeding. I guess I thought by now he'd maybe only wake once especially since his total for the day is 35 oz. And since formula takes longer to digest I was hoping for longer stretches. I'm wondering if he'll ever sleep through the night. My expectations are high I suppose since his sister (18 mos) STTN at 2 months. Is your FF LO doing long stretches or still waking several times? I guess I either need to re-implement the dreamfeed or go to bed earlier.

Re: Formula Feeding MOTN

  • My LO is 8 weeks and takes 3.5 oz each feeding. At night he goes to bed at 8:30-9 and typically sleeps until 3:30-4 and then up for the day at 7. Does he eat often during the day? My LO will eat every 2 hours from 7am-7pm. Can you try feeding him 6 oz at his bed time feeding to hold him over longer? He may just be a baby that wakes a few times at night and you'll just have to get wait it out.

  • I pump, but dd gets formula at night since I'm not making enough. She is 7 weeks and sleeps 7pm till 2 or 3 am, than is up for the day between 6-7am. She takes 4oz per bottle.

I think it depends more on the baby than if they are FF or BF.

  • Wow you are lucky P&B! Unfortunately DS wants to go to bed 7:30-8 so that's when he gets his last bottle. I kinda wish he would go down later!!

Yes every 3 hours - 5 oz. So between day and 2 MOTN feeds = 35 oz which is a ton. I'll try 6 oz at bedtime bottle. I'm just exhausted since I was only asleep a couple hours before he woke first time and I have trouble getting back to sleep MOTN. Ughhh
  • Yes we have a routine but I have found he won't nap much late afternoon so usually by bedtime he's a hot mess. And I have my DD to tend to as well so baths don't happen every night. I just feel like a truck ran over me and am dreaming of only 1x night waking up!!! Oh and I'm too old for this :-)
  • I think every baby is different.

My son is 8 weeks old . He is fed 50:50 formula and breastmilk  and eats 30-35 ounces  a day
I'd say he wakes up about the same as your LO but mine goes to bed around 9:30 - 10 - wakes around 2-3 and is up at 7

  • My LO is ten weeks, takes 4 oz every three hours during the day and wakes usually once around 3:00 to eat at night.
He had gotten to the point where he was waking up every two hours at night. I finally figured out it was his diaper, I was using some I got on sale and he could feel the wetness. I bought a pack of Pampers Baby Dry to use at night and now he's back on his regular schedule.
  • LOL at "wondering if he'll ever STTN!" Too early to worry about it. Sounds like he's doing great, keep doing what you're doing.

Don't laugh I seriously had a dream of him still night waking while in high school LOL As I said..I'm comparing him too much to my daughter who was a rock star sleeper. Every baby is different.. :-)

  • LO is 9 weeks and eats 4oz every three-ish hours. Last feed is around 7 then he sleeps until 930 when he gets his last bottle. He wakes around 3am and then again at 6am. Sometimes he goes back to sleep but lately he's been up for the day. He naps a lot too. We have sort of a loose routine, not really a schedule.

I take half a tablet of unisom before I go to sleep, usually after his 930 feeding. I find it helps me fall asleep after MOTN feedings but I'm not so out of it that I can't take care of him. We formula feed so not sure if that's safe to take while breastfeeding. I also took it during pregnancy at dr's recommendation.

I may have to look into this RE unisom. It's been so difficult getting back to sleep and then once I do he's up again!
  • LO will be 10 weeks tomorrow. She currently has 4oz around 9pm, wakes between 5-6am and then goes back down for 3 more hours. Night time has never been a problem, she's so easy at night, it's during the day when she won't nap at all most days that i feel like a loser.

  • My guy is nearly 8 weeks. He goes down for the night at 7:30 ish and sleeps until about 4, drinks 4 ounces, goes back to sleep and is up at 7 and ready for 6 ounces.

He had been waking at 1am but was hardly eating an ounce so I suspected it was more a habit waking. When I feed him MOTN I feed him in the crib with lights on the dimmest setting and say nothing/avoid eye contact, no diaper change if it's just pee. That helps him fall right back asleep.

I started going into his room at midnight and gently touching/rubbing him. He'd stir a little and re-settle without fully waking up. When I did this the 1am feed dropped and after three days I stopped going in at 12 and he still didn't wake up so mission accomplished, lol.
  • my son is 3 months today, and about 3 days ago we started him sleeping in his own room, and he does a little rice cereal in his bottle for reflux.  Well in the last 3 days he's started sleeping through the night.  Last night he went to sleep at 10pm and I had to wake him up at 7 this morning for a dr. appointment.  He just started sleeping longer on his own.  It really felt like this happened overnight, he started wanting to go to sleep earlier (we were putting him to bed at midnight), and he just slept later and later, first night was 5am, then 6, and now 7.  My little baby is growing up :(

  • LO is 10 wks and is eating 6 oz every 3 hrs in the day, totaling 36 oz. He goes to sleep in the living room around 8 (when dd goes to bed) and then DH gives him a bottle with a tsp of cereal (reflux) at 10:30. From there he is swaddled and in the RnP in our room. He will sleep anywhere from 3:30-5:30, has a bottle, and usually goes back down for a few hrs. Even though it's unwarranted I'm getting a little impatient with this also. DD was sttn at 6 wks ( the day we went to 100% formula) so we were spoiled. Every baby is truly different I guess.

  • DD is 7 weeks and she gets up sometimes at midnight then at 3 then at 6 and she eats 4-5 ounces each time.

I don't know what we're doing right... (or wrong)... but LO has her last feeding between 8:30-10 and sleeps through the night until 5:00-6:00am.  She gets 5oz every 3 hours... for a total of 30oz a day.

I think it's either that our room is pitch black or the sound machine. Heaven SENT!

DS is 7.5 weeks old and takes 5 oz every 3 hours (30 oz total). I feed him at 8:30, put him to bed (swaddle) and then I wake and feed him again around 11-11:30. He then will sleep until around 7:30-8!!! I really recommend reading Baby Wise...so far it has worked with this baby & it worked with our 2.5 year old (always a great sleeper unless sick or something). Try to follow the pattern of eat, wake time, sleep time during the day...that really seemed to help both of them fall into a routine & sttn early on (around 6-7 weeks for both of them).
  • My LO is nearly 8 weeks, we do bath bottle bed every night, which starts around 7.30pm (sorting ds1 out too) he has 4oz but doesn't actually end up sleeping until 9-10pm and sometimes had another oz or 2 before sleeping, He sleeps until 4am then has 2-4oz then goes back until 6
  • DD eats about 4 oz every 3-4 hours during the day, for a total of about 28 oz a day.  Up until 5 days ago she would wake 3x a night to eat.  Then for 4 nights she only woke twice, but last night woke only once!  She eats more often in the evening (about every 2-2.5 hours) for two feedings.  We put her to bed around 9 pm, and she gets up for the day around 7 am.  I'm not expecting the one MOTN feeding to continue, but it sure was great!  She was 10 weeks yesterday.
