Question for baby wearing moms!

So I currently have an Action Baby Carrier.  I love it, I often use it at home, and I bring it with me when I remember.  However, now that we are transitioning E to the convertible car seat and I don't have the car seat to carry anymore, I think it would be nice to have a carrier to keep in the car all the time.  I want something safe, but I don't want to spend a ton of money, because it probably wont' get a ton of use, I just want it as a back up.  So I am thinking of getting a ring sling.  I don't really know much about them, so for those of you that have them, tell me some pros and cons.
Also, she's a small 9 month old (just under 18lbs), but I don't want to buy something that I won't be able to use long.  Are you able to carry bigger babies with a ring sling?

I've also been looking at a Mei Tai.  Thoughts on those?

Thanks ladies :)

Re: Question for baby wearing moms!

  • I love my ring sling, especially for quick trips. I use a hip carry, so he can see what's going on. Easy to get baby in and out. They can be pricey. Check out Babywearing on a Budget on FB for deals under $100.

I keep a ring sling in the car for quick trips into the store, etc. I love it! I do a side carry & Sadie loves looking around. I wish I had bought it sooner.
Pro: it's quick & easy, she'll fit in it for a long time, she loves it, perfect for short trips
Con: it can get uncomfortable if used too long IMO. She's a big girl so it starts to hurt my shoulder after 20 minutes or so.
I have a mei tai too but haven't used it in awhile. It was too much hassle for quick trips into the store, but is more comfortable for longer usage times. I need to get it back out & try it again now that she's bigger.
Eta: I got my sling at bru for $60 (I think). It's the only one they sell...I'll try to link later. (My phone is being stupid right now)
  • I just wanted to second looking for baby wearing meetups. The baby wearing meetup helped me decide when I was looking for a baby carrier that does back carrying. They all fit different depending your body. Also I found a local babywearing trade/sale FB group.

  • Personally I prefer a woven wrap for back carries and I can carry him for way longer in it. However there is a big learning curve. My husband loves the ring sling (and I definitely like it too) and can carry him a lot longer than I.

You can use ring slings with toddlers for sure. They are awesome for quick trips to the grocery store.

Mei tai was great when Ryker was little... I can't seem to fit him in it properly now he's older so I would see about trying a few things out first. do you have a local babywearing group?
