C-sections

Was a vacuum used to get baby out during c-section?

This happened to me and I was very surprised. I thought this only happened with vaginal deliveries. I was very scared when I heard the doc ask for a vaccum. I assume the baby was too high or wouldn't fit and that's why it was used. Am expecting another baby and I really hope they wont need to use a vacuum again.

Anyone else have this happen? Did the doc tell you why they used it?

  • 2 c- sections, no vacuum.

  • I don't think so... My c section was a very last minute one do to baby being too big and I was knocked out because NO pain meds worked for me... So not sure of they used it.

  • I've had 2 cs's and they never used the vacuum with me. They do need to be able to push the baby out of the incision somewhat to clear the lungs. I didn't realize that until my DH told me that's what was happening (and obviously why I felt the pressure).

Definitely ask your OB to explain it to you, that will ease your mind : )

  • My OB did use the vacuum with V.  She was really high and didn't want to come out ;).  I heard her ask for it and asked her later why she needed it just because I was curious.

Did your baby end up in the NICU? Mine did and I sometimes wonder if the vacuum birth had anything to do with it. He had some problems breathing. Am going to ask the doc about it.

  • She was in the NICU but she was 6 1/2 weeks early.  She didn't have breathing issues though.  She had a few apnea spells related to her prematurity and low blood sugar.  How's your little guy doing now?

He's doing great, thanks for asking! He was only in the NICU for 3 days and we were very thankful for that. I think a part of me was just a little sad coz I didnt get to room with him and see him as often as I had hoped. Am very greatful though that the docs and nurses took great care of him and he was ok. Hows your daughter doing?

  • With both boys they needed to use the vacuum.... They were pretty far up, I assume thats why... I labored and pushed with Ry, so maybe thats why she didn't need it?

  • DD did get vacuumed out lol. She was so high that one dr was up near my head pushing down, while another pushed my belly, while the last vacuumeed. Lol, Thank the lord she was healthy and ready to see me within a few minutes.

  • No vac on DD but I've heard of it, mostly for babies who are high and they can't push down well.  DD had the opposite problem and cause for the c/s - breech and slipping down too far one foot first.

  • Yes I had a vacuum used. The dr said it was because he was stuck.

  • Yep. There were some difficulties w/ my section and they struggled to get her out. It didn't work and she had a horrible hematoma for about 6 weeks from it too.
  • for DS #2, they used forceps. I had no idea they were used in c/s either, and only found out b/c I asked about all the marks on DS's face. I guess his head was very low and engaged, and it would have been hard to get him out otherwise

  • 2 c/s and no vacuum. My incision is so incredibly small though (not complaining) I have no idea how they got the baby out both times. My babies were smaller than average, but still!

  • No vacuum, however my birth plan specifically said no vacuum or forceps unless it was an absolute emergency. I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

Very interesting...! maybe it does make a difference if someone has a birth plan.

  • I heard suction, like at the dentist.  When they explained what was going to happen and what I would experience beforehand they told me I would hear that but they didn't say why, nor did I ask.  I assumed it was to suction blood, but maybe it was a vacuum for the baby because my breech girl was very high and I was shocked at how low my Dr was able to do the incision.

Hello... My little man. Was born..Saturday.  April 26, 2014... my husband and I noticed my "Baby Bump" Halloween night while getting ready for a gathering..2 weeks later, my 1st Ob-Gyn apt.. on a Monday morning-920..got a call back 645pm " confirmed pregnant yet YOU ARE HIGHLY PREGNANT!, Come back in first thing in the morning.".I replied.."OK".. the Atlanta GYN-OB..staff are very nice and seem to know their jobs..YET !! every other appointment I was given a scare. I am 37, married, and our first baby..****. I was born 3 months premature, 3 pounds and 7 ounces.. stayed in an incubator my first couple of months due to low iron,..after about a year ..my blood cells collapsed,< I died > a few times.. my final height at moment is 5'11 an weigh 135 before my little man.. .. *** I made sure they new I was anxious due to my personal issue.. -The Atlanta/pleasant hill location a shored me, my baby would be fine..ok.. 1. Scare - Your highly pregnant? < twins> no,just 18.5 weeks pregnant...2. Your Blood count is low, redid test. 3 Your protein count is high. 4..paper work for both visit of hospital and pre-admission never made it.
-along with a few other scares..my Blood was low- I ate more greens. my protein count was high-just had a protein shake with iron.. ok nothing major..all made sense and fixable.. ..ok April 24th, THURSDAY, I WENT INTO LABOR PAINS..940am was my GYN-OB appointment, I went..was told I was dilating and baby would be here anytime !!,day..due Saturday...yet their youngest doctor said.. I WILL GO AHEAD AN ADMIT YOU TO THE HOSPITAL if any thing changes.. I had no symptoms of being pregnant..JUST THE BUMP WAS GROWING ! and my feet swelled..at 6PM I FAIL TO MY KNEES crying in pain..and yelled at my husband to take me on over to the hospital in Decatur,GA:. ..a good 45 minute drive on a good clear day.. we arrived at the hospital at 7..I got checked in for pre-admission.7:15pm..MY PAPER WORK NEVER GOT PUT INTO THEIR SYSTEM..< I had it faxed 2 times, and did on-line  2 times, called for confirmation thru out the pregnancy even for the Decatur Hospital visit..I did all the paper work..not the OB-GYN nor the hospital, it seems. cause I had to redo all of it when I got there, even tho it was in their FILL BOX on the shelf behind the computer... I got checked in 7:15pm..sent to a pre admission room, reviewed my dilation's.Waited..Thursday,,spent the night,,Friday morning sent into a hospital  delivery room and was in labor the whole time just MISS DILATED. Friday morning one doctor that I had meet at ob-gyn Broke my water,,then a nurse took over,,I fussed her out cause I did not know her..WAS TOLD BY KIM AT PLEASENT HILL LOCATION " MAKE SURE YOU KNOW ALL OUR DOCTORS ,BEFORE YOU GO TO THE HOSPITAL..!! I made sure I did.. ..Friday morning,  -The doctor I liked...the Experienced  doctor that was down to earth with ability to communicate in non-text book terms BROKE MY WATER,THEN LEFT !!.. next got a nurse who was to busy to care for me Yet pulled something from under me, causing me discomfort SO I YELLED AT HER..and at the staff.." I WANT MY DOCTORS !" since I was told by KIM. make sure you know our doctors, do not let any one touch you or that baby. ok ..NURSE ABBY. I don't know you.leave me alone..besides your too busy with another patient.and other activities to acknowledge me..STOP !.. I then got tied down to the bed. and surrounded by Decaturs staff..to me jumped..so yes, I panic..I was in pain, tired, anxious..not understanding where my doctors where.and wanted my baby to be ok...all the scare tactics and what if's went through my mind. then a MID-WIFE for the gyn-ob, who I never met.. came in to take over the delivery of my little man. I had reviewed websights for both the Atlanta gyn-ob, and Decatur hospital and the mid-wife seemed nice and knowledgeable.. ok..the mid-wive, a few nurses, my husband and I pushed most of Friday for my little man to come.. I saw 7:47, I saw 3:45 on the clock not knowing day/night due to being IN LABOR the whole time..finally the mid-wife shift was over, SHE DID HER JOB!! and stayed late to help me..with re-assuring I and my little man would be alright..then my short doctor from the gyn-ob came to work on my pregnancy/ labor...she found out that my little man was stuck..she went into immediate vacuum surgery mood, full face gear, gloves, uniform, ready to work..even had her step stool... She did her job, found the problem and did what she knew to do.. the vacuum did not work, even tho, IT DID LEAVE A MARKING on my little mans head...next this short doctor, rushed me in to an EMERGENCY C-SECTION.. i was about to loose the baby, i heard some one say..-- once again I fussed, I DID NOT UNDERSTAND what was going on..and the effects of all this...plus all the pain meds they had me on...that made the pregnancy experience, NOT GOOD !..then the recovery room ,,BS, it was just my husband, myself, and my little man.. I was tied down to the bed.. had pressure wrap on right arm, ivy needle in left hands cable hooked to bed where I could not move, my feet were in vibrating boots to help with swelling < NOT WORKING>  was told BREAST FEEDINGS THE BEST for new born.. and here's a book . read it to learn about what you just went thru and how to handle your issues.. I NEVER ONCE SAW MY DOCTOR...until the very end and it was the VACUUM///EMERGENCY C-section doctor...no other time did I see a doctor that I was told ..BY KIM, MAKE SURE TO MEET ALL OUR DOCTORS.. I really can not answer about what the vacuum was like except IT LEFT A MARK on my little mans head..and a <Butterfly tattoo > scar.. I got very MAD.. due to lack of communication..and then PISSED about the whole pregnancy experience.. DO NOT GO TO DEKALB MEDICAL, or to ATLANTA GYN-OB... I do not have POST DEPRESSION... I am MAD ...BEYOND MAD..DUE TO THEIR COMMUNICATION AND POOR OPERATIONS... from paper work issues to communication issues to miss dilating a pregnancy to batteries not up to date on a machine to even being told my baby is about to die, while I've was working/pushing with a healthy, text book baby.. due April 26th. .. MY LITTLE MAN was born,,APRIL 26,2014 at 7:39am... thank you for doing your jobs-Dekalb yet I WILL NEVER BE BACK ! NOR WILL I SUGGEST A FRIEND -- YOUR COMMUNICATION - bed side manners SUCK !!!.. they need a vacuum.. clean out all the junk, slack workers, broken machinery, half the nurses...and LEARN CRYSTAL CLEAR COMMUNICATION:) staff to staff, staff to patient , and staff to patients parents/family... I told my doctors in the beginning, that I had issues and was anxious.nervous about my pregnancy.. even told them why I took /ate what I did even that the day I was confirmed pregnant by way of ultra sound "boy!" that my husbands sister-in-law had her 4th baby to die / still born...so yes..I WAS ANXIOUS/ NERVOUS.//SCARED yet over all a text book pregnancy:) and I gave birth to a BEAUTIFUL HEALTHY BABY BOY,,, 8 pounds 7 ounces.. 22 length.. big head 32 cm...

Yes, I didn't even realize, though, until my son's pedi was looking over the hospital paperwork and mentioned it.  I was a little miffed I wasn't told, but it was all fine.
  • With #2 they did use a vacuum.  She said she needed to do it because she couldn't fit her hands around his head.  (He had a HUGE head).

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

  • I only found out later when I read the operative report that they used a vacuum. I was surprised because I had no clue. I didn't hear anything. DD was high so maybe they needed help to grab on to her, I dunno.

  • first my incision needed to be made bigger because the baby was not going to be able to fit out. then he got stuck so they needed the vacuum. you can only imagine my thoughts as i heard them ask for the tool to make it bigger then the vaccuum. i didn't want to ask questions in the moment but my husband and i were talking and wondering. in the end my baby was 10.3 and 22.5 i myself am very tiny so it was a huge shock.

  • I ended up having an emergency C-section.  A vacuum was used as he had stretched his legs into my ribs and they were stuck.  No problems with him after delivery.  I think it's just something that has to be done sometimes.
