Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby never seems done

My son is 13 days old, we're pumping and nursing. whether he is on the breast or bottle, he never seems to be done. He gives signs like falling asleep, intermittent sucking, etc. but he has only detached himself once! If I try to remove the breast, he wakes up and fusses. I put him back on and the cycle starts again.

I do use a nipple shield, and today I was able to replace the shield with a pacifier with some success.

Is he really still hungry or do some babies just hate having whatever is in their mouth removed? If he is hungry, is there any way to make feedings have a more defined "end" so I'm not playing the guessing game each time?

Re: Baby never seems done

  • No advice but I seem to be having the same problem at 11 days. However sometimes she falls off and falls asleep and soon after she's awake and hungry again like she never finished - especially in the middle of the night after I put her down. I have no idea how to tell when she's done or just sucking for fun. Frustrating!

Is he gaining weight? He is still learning how to suck and he will get more proficient. A nurse told me to do 20 minutes per side when I went through this with my son. I think he was using my boob as a pacifier. Also try to burp him between boobs and give him time for his tummy to get that full feeling. I hate saying this but it will get better with time. Just make sure he is gaining weight. That would be my concern. My son is 2 months now and he will still hang out if I let him, luckily he doesn't fuss when I detach him.

  • Also you can pay attention to whether you can hear him swallowing. I still have a hard time figuring that out sometimes.

  • He could be a lazy eater so 10 minutes after we start he seems to fall asleep and I thought he was just comfort nursing so we gave a paci. Come to find out he wasn't gaining weight and his pedi told us we had to supplement to catch him up and see a lactation consultant I felt terrible but stuck with it and let him go for as long as he wanted to see how long it took him. 30 min each side satisfies him so he'll unlatch. He goes really good for 5 or 10 min but then he has long pauses after that .... I'm hoping he grows out of it but giving him his whole hour got his weight back on track along with 2oz formula to help catch him back up. Lactation consultants have scales where you go in for a nursing session and they weight baby before you start about half way through and after to see how many ounces baby is getting per session.

  • Waking LO up by burping, changing, etc is recommended if they fall asleep...  My LO does the same sometimes.  If I'm not aggressive about it she'll stretch the feeding for hours...

  • My LC told me to try and feed LO in just a diaper. I've noticed when I do this she does not fall asleep during the feeding and she's not on me for a long period of time. I don't always do this though.

My DS is the same way! He was not getting enough and he was losing weight (I rented a baby scale to keep track of weight gain and am doing weighed feedings). We had to supplement with formula.
