Parenting after a Loss

desperately need your good thoughts- VERY LONG

cuppa and i need your prayers ladies....

so, cuppa was trying to tell me something after all.  i should have listened to her sooner.  last night, after dinner, i was attempting to do kick counts per my OB.  after an hour, i had only counted 4 movements, well short of his anticipated 10+.  so, i called the on call doc and they told me i needed to come in to l&d to have an NST.

we got to the hospital at 9pm.  they hooked me up to the monitors and of course, cuppa began to move for them (i still couldn't feel all of her movements but it was reassuring that they were happening).  however, i was also apparently having fairly significant contractions (also couldn't feel those, surprisingly).  they kept me on the monitors for about an hour, changing my position to see if it helped, etc.  after an hour, the contractions started coming at a rapid pace (every 2-3 minutes it seemed) and i could start to feel them (they didn't hurt, just like really intense BH).

they decided to do a cervical check and found my cervix long and closed.  they did the FFN test, which after an eternal wait, came back negative.  we thought we were in the clear at that point, despite the fact that i was still having contractions.  they gave me IV fluids, antibiotics, and a shot of terb to try to stop the contractions.  after another hour or two, the contractions seemed to have eased, cuppa was still moving, and i thought again, we're in the clear.

until they did the next cervical check....

the contractions that had been coming so intensely had dilated my cervix to a fingertip, causing a rash of alarm to spread from the doctor to the nursing staff.  i was immediately given the first of 2 steroid shots and admitted for continued montoring.  of course, i was terrified (as was mr. soup) and they couldn't tell me that cuppa wouldn't be coming.  the FFN came back negative which also surprised us all, as that result didn't seem to align with what my body seemed to be doing.  (by the way, the steroid shot was painful, and between my IV, the terb shot and that one, i just felt like everytime someone came into the room i was going to be stabbed).

somehow, overnight, my uterus got the message that it needed to knock this crap off and my contractions stopped, cuppa continued to move, and at last cervical check around 5:30 this morning, no further dilation was detected.  so, they discharged me home on bedrest for at least today.  i have to go back to l&d at 7am tomorrow morning for the 2nd steroid shot.  the OB on-call seemed less concerned that labor/delivery was as imminent as she thought it might be last night, which of course i'm happy about.  they told me that they would love to see me get to 37/38 weeks but that if not, at least the baby will have had the shots to help mature her lungs.

i have to take an antibiotic for the next few days and rest as much as possibly and will keep my u/s appointment for monday to see how big/developed cuppa is.  this appointment suddenly has a lot more significance for us than it did just yesterday.

i guess the moral here is that i really now believe that cuppa's decreased movement was her way of getting me in to be monitored.  while i defintely can feel contractions now when i have them, i had no idea what was going on before they were monitoring me.  super scary, but also a huge relief that so many precautions were taken in a short span of time (that felt like an eternity) to help keep our baby safe.

so, any continued non-labor, lots of movement, stay put vibes you can spare, i'll take.  not how i wanted to end 2008, but at least now i have more faith that cuppa will be here closer to when she was expected and not too early.

  • Hi May, not sure if you remember me from PL but I've been lurking for awhile now on these boards! A lot of the issues you're having came up with my pregnancy with PTL and GD. If you want, I can email you with some insight. Let me know and GL!
  • May - Sorry to hear of your ordeal but it was reassuring to learn of the great medical care it seems that you received. I hope you and Cuppa continue to do well and that DD stays put for a couple more weeks.

As Dr G wrote, their seem to be a lot of succes stories of ladies who may have delivered early but went on to have full term delieries.

    Prayers sent!

dr.g, did you end up getting steroid shots?  i think that's when it hit home that there was real reason to worry.  i really, really, really hope that like kiran, cuppa stays put.  i need at least 5-6 more weeks with her inside!

  • Reading your story was a flashback of mine. Almost to the tee. I ended up on modified bedrest from 32-36 weeks. I was 50% effaced and a fingertip dilated at 32 weeks. I got the steroid shots, NST, etc....

I ended up going to term.

Moral of the story, your body likes playing tricks on you. I am convinced that my ds likes getting a rise out of his parents. :-)

  • I'll be thinking of you both - stay put cuppa!
  • Okay, Cuppa....you need some more cooking so knock it off!  Seriously, I had to get NST and ultrasounds once per week after 30w in order to check growth and fluid and it was very reassuring so I hope they continue to monitor you so closely!  I am glad you both are receiving such good medical care!
  • Positive thoughts are with you.?

dr. boyd was on call and treating me last night.  she was wonderful.  very thorough, and very compassionate, both things i really needed.  you wouldn't believe how nutty l&d was though.  they were doubling up rooms.   for a while i shared a recovery room with a woman who spoke no english and had just had a c-section.  all was fine until they started doing my cervical checks and her translator was a male with wandering eyes.  the nurse finally got the message when trevor closed my curtain!  i told them that they could give all of the other people there the tax credit and that i was fine waiting until 2010 to claim mine!

thank you so much!  this is exactly what i need to hear.  i hope cuppa follows suit!

  • we had more than a couple pre-term labor problems with DD... keeping my fingers crossed for cuppa to stay in there at least till 37 weeks... keep those legs crossed lady and take it easy!!! lol

that turb shot wacked me out man... made me feel like they gave me 42 cups of coffee in one shot... hated it... but they made the non-feeling contractions stop...

i always found it amazing that i would time my contractions (at around your stage) at about 5 mins apart, but go and get checked and they'd be up to 2-3 mins apart... amazing what those L&D monitors can detect!

  • Wow - scary!  I am happy to hear everything is OK.  Please rest and take care of yourself.  Cuppa just can't wait to meet her mommy! :)
  • Wow, that's scary.  I'll be thinking of you today and praying that Cuppa hangs out until at least the end of January!

  • The same thing happened to me at 31w. I was hospitalized for 24 hours and then sent home to bedrest. I was taken off of the terb at 36w3d, one week later my water broke. Just take care of yourself. Be sure to drink lots of water and rest. Thinking good thoughts for you.
  • You have all my good thoughts, prayers and vibes.  I am so glad you called the doctor and went.  You are already a very good momma.  And you are right--always listen to your gut (no pun intended)!

I am so sorry you went through that, and glad you are ok.  It is time to give the uterus a strong talking to--I think Newt did that once.  Cuppa--as Isabela would say--"Stay put, don't you move, not even an inch'.  Keep baking, Cuppa.

But it is great you had the first steroid shot and are getting the second--just in case Cuppa makes a little earlier appearance!  Be well over NYE--no dancing on the table...

    Many good thoughts, Love, Jill

  • Get lots of rest and keep that cuppa cookin'.
  • Sending lots and lots of prayers to you, Mr. Soup and cuppa
  • thoughts and prayers that cuppa cooks some more!

:::::::Hands May some duck tape so she can super seal up her cervix::::::::::::

I know the situation is serious, but maybe the thought will make you smile and laugh. Take it easy so Cuppa can keep baking.

  • Sending loads of prayers your way May.?
  • WOW glad to her things are going better now, stay in there cuppa and keep on cooking for at least a few more weeks.

  • Sending you lots of good thoughts--stay put Cuppa!!  Terb can be yucky (I was on it from weeks 24-37 when I delivered).  You, Mr. Soup, and Cuppa will remain in my thoughts...please keep us updated.
  • I'm sorry you are going through this May, I know it's scary! I had PTL at 30 weeks, did 6 weeks of bedrest and meds for ctx, and Abigail came the day after her due date - there seem to be several stories like that around here!

It is so great that they are taking good care of you and being proactive with the steroid shots - I have lots of faith that you and cuppa will be just fine. Stay put little baby!

You guys are in my prayers!

  • Oh dear, may.  I'm so glad you got checked out.  Will be thinking of you and cuppa.

Stay in there, little girl.  The outside world is cold and snowy.

  • Ahhhh, May!! I can't believe I just saw this post. I'm so sorry you are going through all of this drama. But the important thing is that Cuppa is okay and that she is in good hands... hopefully they will be able to keep her in there a bit longer... but remember, you are so close to that 34 week mark when things get a lot less scary. Just stay in bed and take care of yourself. Lots of positive, anti-labor thoughts coming your way!!
  • holy cow may!  I hope cuppa decides that its nice and warm inside and she needs to wait a few more weeks before finding out whats out here!
