XP.. Question about ob/where to deliver!

Are you going to see a high risk OB doc? Are you going to make sure to deliver at a level 3 NICU? Or are you going off who your RE refers you to? I know I'm early, but just trying to plan & I have no idea where to start!

I'm asking this bc there are two level 3 NICU hospitals in my area, but both are about 25 miles away. In January, in the snow, could be bad news...

TIA!

Re: XP.. Question about ob/where to deliver!

  • I'm going to an OB. He's not an MFM, but the office provides care for high-risk pregnancies. He delivers at a hospital with a Level III NICU, so that hasn't even been a question.

I was lucky to deliver at our local hospital that has a level 3, so there was no question.
At this stage if I were you I'd register at the highest level NICU in your area, but also at a local hospital. That way you'll be ready either way. It's free to register, and relatively easy... totally worth the peace of mind. It's so hard to predict what will happen now, do what you can to provide yourself with options later.

  • I made a point of switching from one ob that delivered at a hospital I was not comfortable w to a level 4 nicu w a practice of two doctors who are mfm.

I do not see an MFM or high risk OB but my OB team does have high risk/twin experience and there is an MFM in house should I need it. I'm, honestly, not sure what level NICU we have here but we do have one that I've heard good things about. We are at a military hospital in a small town so our options are limited. A few twin moms have recommended the better and bigger hospital an hour away but I was not comfortable receiving care that far of a distance. I feel much better being 5 minutes away from my OB and hospital.
  • I saw my OB and midwife, with monthly consults (plus all our major u/s) with MFM. They were all affiliated with the same hospitals and we did it that way due to the distance (1.5hrs). Plan was to deliver at the L3 NICU where MFM was if I went into labor prior to 36wks. After I hit 35.5, I was allowed to deliver at the closer hospital unless my preference was for the MFM's one.

I had always planned to deliver at the hospital with a level 3 NICU and after a nun eventful pregnancy was thinking I could have looked at other options...and then I went into preterm labor at 32w5d...my twins were born at 33w and I am so glad I was at the level 3 NICU. Things can go wrong quickly in a multiples pregnancy.
