Hiccups?

Is anyone else still getting hiccups from their LO? I hadn't noticed them until last week (32 weeks) and now I am feeling them about 3-4 times each day for about 5 min. She is still moving around a lot in there also, but I had read that hiccups are supposed to decrease after 30 weeks and could be a sign of cord compression. I will be asking my doctor tomorrow at my appointment and I try to take what I read on the internet with a grain of salt, just wanted to see if anyone else was still getting them this much?

Re: Hiccups?

  • I am 32 weeks today and still feeling hiccups a few times a day. I didn't know there was cause for concern...

I am 33 weeks and feel hiccups multiple times a day. I'm pretty sure I felt hiccups with DS up until he was born.

  • I'm 33 weeks. My midwife told me it was normal to feel them. She didn't mention any certain number of times a day or duration to be worried about.

I feel them every day and remember feeling them up until the end with my first.

  • Thanks y'all! I was paranoid during the 1st tri and then great during the 2nd. Now that we are getting so close I think I am just worrying again. Time to stay off the internet for the next 7 weeks!
  • I am 31 weeks and just felt them for the first time on Saturday.

As someone who's at risk for cord compression, due to PROM and low fluid, this is not something I was told to look out for. My little one gets hiccups several times a day, often during my twice daily NSTs and the nurses just chuckle.
I'm not at risk but I've never heard either that its something to be concerned about.  Bring it up to your doctor and let us know what they say.  Is that something you read on the internet?

  • I am 31 weeks and my LO has hiccups at least every other day, I have been feeling them for the past couple of weeks as well
  • I will be 32 weeks tomorrow and don't think I have felt them yet. I was worried about NOT feeling them!  I do feel lots of regular movement everyday though.

  • Yes I read it several places, including from the national stillbirth society (it just popped up when I had googled hiccups). It said you should be concerned if you feel a sudden increase in fetal hiccups so I was just worried because I hadn't really noticed them until last week and now it is happening 3-4 times each day. I just had an ultrasound last tuesday and all was well so I am sure I am just over analyzing. I also know babies lungs are still developing so I am sure it is completely normal and I am just reading the worst case scenarios. I also freak out if she isn't moving around as much for a couple of days, but then she will bounce like crazy in there the next several days.
  • DD had hiccups all the time when I was pregnant with her. The only thing they indicated is that she would have the hiccups a lot in her first 1.5 years.

  • I'm 32 weeks now and probably only really noticed hiccups for the past month or so, since around the time that third tri started.  So far, so good with baby.

  • I just realized this week that I was feeling his/her hiccups. I probably feel at least once a day for about 5-10 minutes, but sometimes 2-3 times a day, separate instances.  Before 3rd tri, I didn't notice/feel them.
  • I haven't felt any hiccups at all this time around, and it's sort of freaking me out, even though she moves all the time. With DD I had them all the way to the end.
  • I dont know what they feel like ? So i dont know if i have had them lol

I asked on Friday and this is exactly what my OB said about her son.

@Jessicalig When my baby was head down it just felt like little jerks coming from my pelvis every second or so. Family members could feel them from the outside too, kind of entertaining!

    mmsweeney1 thanks maybe i have felt them : )

Yep- they are incredibly rhythmic- much different than random kicks and punches. I think this is exactly how I would describe them. I always feel mine towards the back of my pelvis and really low.
  • DD hardly hiccuped at all in utero and rarely got/gets the hiccups as a baby and toddler. I've started to feel them fairly regularly with this LO -- I suspect he'll get them more as an outside baby too. It will be interesting to compare.
  • DS1 had the hiccups all the time up until birth.. and 2 years later he still gets them all the time.

  • Well I asked my doctor today and she said it's completely normal! Hiccups are only a cause to worry if they last a very long time or are accompanied by less or very erratic movement. Thanks for helping ease my mind!
  • 33 weeks, and he gets them multiple times a day.  Sometimes he'll have them for about a half hour.  This has been going on for weeks.  I asked about hiccups and cord compression at my last appointment, and my OB said not to worry.  He said as long as he still moves around a lot, then things should be fine because cord compression isn't something that gets better.  Being PGAL, I still worry every time he gets the hiccups, but I'm trying not to.
