LC visit: milk protein & tongue tie

Hi

I had a LC come over yesterday and she said to do a milk protein elimination diet due to my own medical history and fussiness, spit up, and distress while eating. She's going to email me a list of things I cannot eat, including the hidden milk products. She also said my baby has posterior tongue tie & lip tie. So, now I have questions:

1. What CAN I eat? I tried to make myself breakfast this morning and it seems like everything has milk in it...even pancake & hot chocolate mix. I was left with the banana my husband forgot to take to work and a piece of toast w/PB. I love milk, yogurt, & cheese...are there any substitute products I can have? Am I left with vegan products & how do they taste? I have Whole Foods & Trader Joes all around me, but I'm a really picky eater & I don't like to try new foods.

2. Does she really have a milk protein intolerance? As I was feeding the baby through the night, I started thinking that if she really has a milk protein intolerance/allergy, wouldn't she display these symptoms all day? Yes, she spits up through the night, but I only see the distress and fussiness from late afternoon until she goes to bed. My niece & nephew both had this and my baby is nothing compared to how they were.

3. Should I have the tongue/lip tie thing checked out before I start the milk elimination diet?

  • Distress while eating sounds more like reflux.

  • Thanks @casey78. She does have what we were told was cradle cap and then baby acne by 2 different dr's in our practice. Then the LC asked if anyone mentioned it being eczema. These same dr's said her behavior was normal and the other said it was reflux. It's been very frustrating because it seems like no one can agree on what's wrong.

  • You can check out our MSPI check in posts for food ideas. They're archived at mspimoms.blogspot.com. If her poop is normal I agree it sounds more like reflux than MPI, though.
  • I haven't had her poop tested yet. I am going to call the dr on Monday. Here is a pic of her cheek. Is this what eczema looks like? Or is it really cradle cap? She's had this since around 2 weeks (6 weeks now) & it started on her forehead. That cleared up for the most part. Now we're left with this on her cheeks, temples, and behind her ears. She has some dry patches on her scalp.

Sounds more like colic than mpi. Three of my 4 kids had mpi and they had symptoms all day, had difficulty gaining weight and mucousy poop.

  • It could just be baby acne, but DD had a similar rash on her face and chest. When I cut out "obvious" dairy, it went away (and she got less fussy). I don't know that she had a full-on milk protein intolerance, but maybe a sensitivity. In any event, I saw a difference after about 72 hours, and was able to reintroduce dairy around 6m (and she eats it now no problem). I suppose it can't hurt to cut out dairy for a week and see what happens?

  • I agree with PP about just giving it a try. My twin boys have always had reflux (but not bad enough to need meds) but when I had more dairy than usual their spit up would be really hot curdled milk. This is what made me wonder about any milk sensitivities. I mentioned it to their pedi but since they didn't have a rash he didn't think they had a problem. I eliminated dairy (and soy) just to see if it helped and it did. There was less fussiness and no more curdled spit up. I think it's worth a try so at least you know whether it could help your LO or if it is reflux. The symptoms kind of overlap so I think it's hard to pinpoint. I applaud all the mamas out there that have done the major allergy elimination. Losing all of those foods in the name of LO feeling better is amazing. Sorry for the ramble... GL!

  • Thank you. Her spit up is curdled, but no one seemed concerned. I cut dairy starting Friday, but haven't seen much of a difference. We went to the dr today& there was no blood in her stool, but dr said there could be an intolerance instead of an allergy. She gave us neocate to try for a week and a reflux med called Amneal. I still will stay off dairy and just pump and store. I'm just a little worried about my supply with pumping because I become engorged even when I pump for 5 min.

  • OP, if you're going to EP for a week, you should try to make sure you are pumping at least 8x per day with a hospital grade pump. Pump for about 20 minutes, in 5-8 minute cycles - use the letdown button every 5-8 minutes to stimulate your body to get an extra letdown and mimic the way a baby eats. You should DEFINITELY be pumping for more than 5 minutes at a time (not sure if that was a typo?).

  • I already have oversupply so my worries were about creating more, not less w/pumping. I can't pump for more than 5-10 min otherwise I become horribly engorged. I pumped 4x today which was fine.
