Ok I need switching to formula help..

I've been reading all similar posts and can't find an answer to fit me specifically.
I've been EP and will be going out of town before I return to work and am wanting to have her on formula by the time I go to work. (I do have a breastmilk stash in the freezer and will continue to give her one a day)
We tried similac advanced by adding in 1 formula feeding each day...Constipated. Took a week off before trying again.

Tried similac for supplementation. This time 1/3 formula and 2/3 breastmilk. Cue screaming baby during feeding and terrible painful gas and constipation again.
Tried gripe water and gas drops and switching bottles. No help.

Now we are trying similac sensitive. Still have terrible gas, crying during feeding. No constipation but she is waking herself up less than an hour after going to sleep to fart! Needless to say last night she did not sleep more than an hour at a stretch and would wake up acting gassy. I would offer a bottle incase it's a growth spurt but she refused it or would not finish.

This can't be normal? It has been 2 days on the sensitive formula and I don't think it's going to be the winner.

What would be my next steps? Any reccome stations on which formula to try next? We leave for 10 days starting Wednesday and I will be taking my pump with me but was really hoping to have found a formula.

Re: Ok I need switching to formula help..

  • No real advise, but we do 2oz enfamil gentlease mixed with 2oz pumped milk (he eats about 4oz each feeding now). And before I feed him I put gas drops in the bottle and swirl it around. We are using avent classic bottles in the 4oz size and we burp after every ounce. I don't know if any of that helps, but it seems to work got us.

  • I was thinking of trying enfamil gentle ease next..

Try a different brand, try pre-mixing your bottles so that the bubbles have time to settle, and try giving gas drops.

  • We tried using similac however we were having the same out come you were. My son would go into a screaming fit when he was either having a BM or super gassy. I think its more the brand than the actually type. We have our son on Gerber gentle now and he does fine with it.

My son (now 3) didn't have a problem with BM but I had similar issues with formula. We had luck with similac soy and when we switched to milk I noticed soy milk worked best for him. He is fine with cheese but I think once he gets too much lactose he has stomach pains. Good luck finding what works for you guys!

In my experience (switching to formula from breast milk) it took more than a few days for baby to adjust to the change. In my daughter's case, it took at least a week, but the rule of thumb is to give it two weeks before trying a new formula. It has been about two weeks now on similac sensitive and she is SO much better than she was the first few days on it.

  • I picked up a few small sizes of other brands.
We do let the bottles sit before feeding and lots of burping.
    Thanks for the advice everyone.
Will give her a few days on sensitive before I try anything else. I'll just take it all with us on the trip in case she doesn't improve by the end of the week.

DD was formula fed from day 4 on, we started with similac advance and she has terrible gas pain, switched to similac sensitive and she was constipated. We now do Enfamil gentleease and she does great on it!

ETA: I also saw that Enfamil has a new formula called Reguline (I think??) that is for constipation.

I use the reguline by emfamil bc we were having the same issues with gas and constipation. It's working great! Solved a lot of our issues! Plus our pedi did a rectal exam to make sure everything was okay and the simple exam stimulated a massive bm that seems to have greatly helped him too.

Pedi said that if he gets constipated again that we can try taking his temp rectally and that may help on the same way

agree w @amroke - Ive heard it can take several days up to 2 weeks to 'get used to' a formula. I think all the switching after a day or even 1 bottle is going to make LOs feel worse than if you stick with 1 formula and give it a chance.

  • I should mention I gave her more than a week on both formulas and took a week break in between the 2 and gave her just breastmilk.
We are on day 4 of similac sensitive and it seems a little better.
  • I've been through similac and enfamil and we are in gerber good start soothe right now and seems like LO loves it. He's sleeping again, still gassy but not in pain! If you can't make your bottles ahead of time try adding the gas drops right to the bottle it will minimize the bubbles for those on the go bottles. We've had success so far with these tricks.
