Can you feel the baby yet?

Hi ladies,

This is my first time posting!

I'm a first time mom and at 23 weeks but still can't feel the baby!!
I just ordered a fetal doppler because I'm that fixated.

Is anyone else experiencing this (or lack of experience)?
When did you first feel it?

Re: Can you feel the baby yet?

  • Welcome! I started feeling around 17 weeks but didn't know at the time that's what it was. Now I can see her movement from the outside at 24 weeks. You'll get there!

  • Have you had your anatomy scan yet?  Did they mention that you had an anterior placenta?  That can mean you will feel baby later.  With my first pregnancy I had an anterior placenta and I first felt her around 21 weeks.  This time I started feeling baby around 17 weeks.  I think not feeling baby before 24ish weeks is still within the range of normal.  I would talk to your doctor if you are concerned.
  • I had been feeling the baby since 15ish weeks without knowing it, just flutters that I passed off as gas.  Finally at 20 wks I knew the movement was def baby and not gas bubbles, and ever since I acknowledged it's her, I feel her all the time, and can even feel it on the outside, only because I know she's kicking from the inside.  DH still can't feel it, he only feels my aorta/heartbeat ;-)  You'll get there and once you feel it, it's the best feeling.  I thought the sound of her heartbeat was my new favorite thing, but now it's the feel of her movement.  (I'm 21wks)

I'm so glad you shared your concern.. Don't feel so crazy now. Also a FTM. I'm 20.5 weeks and haven't felt my little girl yet. I have an anatomy scan tomorrow so hopefully that will alleviate some anxiety. I actually do have a fetal monitor and have been listening to her more frequently since I was "supposed to" start feeling flutters. Hearing the heartbeat definitely helps but I'm still worried. Hopefully she's just lazy like her mama.
  • Welcome! 22 weeks and some change with no.2, and I've been feeling consistent movement for a few weeks now. It's totally normal not to feel movement until 25 weeks (or sometimes more) with first babies, so try not to worry. It's lots of fun and you'll be enjoying it very soon!

  • Have you had your anatomy scan yet?  I wasn't sure whether I was really feeling anything until after I had mine last week.  Once I could connect what was on the screen with what I could feel, I knew I had definitely been feeling the baby move around for a little while.  Before that, it was hard for me to tell if it was gas bubbles or baby since I had no idea what expect the baby would feel like.  I found I had an anterior placenta at the A/S too, which, as PPs have mentioned, also means you may start feeling it later.

This. Placenta positioning apparently does make a difference! I'm a FTM and I felt the first flutters at 18 weeks. DH was able to feel an outside kick for the first time last week (20w3d). The u/s tech at my anatomy scan told me I was feeling movement earlier than most because my placenta is at the back of my uterus, and baby is at the front. If you have an anterior placenta, baby will be at the back and it may take longer to recognize those kicks. Should be soon for you though!
  • Thank you all for the warm welcomes :)

    To answer jcsumm0,

I had the anatomy scan around 20 weeks and saw *her* moving around, even on her feet and kicking her back up again. I should have felt it but didn't. Just anxious to know when it will be obvious.

During the scan, I took note of where the u/s tech was placing the wand. She placed it under the bellybutton, before the bikini line so the baby should be around there.

I did have a previous issue (low lying placenta) where the placenta is too close to the cervix (caused light spotting) and if it doesn't move up closer to delivery then I will have to get a C section. Maybe this is causing me to now feel anything since it's so low. I do occasionally feel some flutters like fart bubbles (lol) but in the lower vagina/ deep down so I don't think they're kicks (focusing on below belly button).

Hoping it's soon! Please share what it feels like!

  • I have an anterior placenta and I've been feeling the baby since 17 weeks. I barely felt DD move before 21 weeks, so it's not uncommon to not feeling much movement.

  • I'm 22w5days and haven't felt anything yet either. I'm sooo impatient! I have the anterior placenta so it's to be expected.

I think this is your baby.  I know my u/s tech said I am carrying low, and I feel him/her down in my pelvis most of the time.  Like sometimes I'm getting pops in the vagina and even toward my butt!  Just because the tech is pointing the wand near your belly button, baby still has a lot of room to move around and feeling her low is pretty normal, IMHO.
  • I started feeling inconsistent flutters at 17 weeks. I had a u/s on the dot and the tech asked if I could feel the movement because she was going crazy, but I couldn't. Now I am 22 weeks and feel her daily, and can see movement from the outside.

  • I have a posterior placenta so I should have felt her sooner, but I didn't feel her until about week 22. And welcome!

  • I'm a first time mom and started feeling a "swirling" like feeling at about 14 weeks, very inconsistent.  Started feeling "popcorn popping" at about 18 weeks.  Real noticeable kicks a couple of weeks ago.  DH felt his first outside kick on Friday the 13th!

I'm almost on the exact same schedule. I'm a FTM and plus size. DH felt him last night actually!

FTM, started feeling bubbles/tickles/flutters around 17 weeks. OP, what you are describing sounds similar. Now week 21 and just started feeling some kicks. I remember my Ob saying at last visit that is normal not to feel consistent movement till 26 weeks

  • This is my second baby. I started feeling kicks about a week ago at 20 weeks and I have been seeing movement for the past few days. I only feel him a couple times a day.

Where you are describing your movement is where I feel all my movement...very very low.

  • I have an anterior placenta and never felt flutters. Last week (20 weeks) I felt a couple kicks and starting Saturday I feel him all day! Everyone is different. Soon enough you'll be saying "calm down little one so I can sleep".

I had my 20 wk a/s at 21 weeks and inquired as to whether I happened to have an anterior placenta. The technician looked at me and said, "Why, yes, you do!" That explained a lot. After that scan, I started finally feeling the baby at about 21.5/22 weeks. I'm 23.5 weeks now and feel the baby daily, but I skipped the whole "flutters" stage. An anterior placenta doesn't mean that you WON'T be able to feel your baby....just that it might take a little longer. :)

  • I'm a FTM and I started feeling light movement at 18 weeks, 2 days. Although it didn't start picking up until weeks 19-20. Just today at 20 weeks, 4 days I felt a lot of movement, told my DH and he was welcomed with a kick to his ear. I thought I would feel movement much later since I had extra "fluff" on my tummy pre-pregnancy, but I guess everyone is different. It'll come soon enough, just be patient. It's definitely worth the wait!
  • I'm 23 weeks 3 days and have been feeling baby boy for about 2 weeks now. So squirmy!
  • Welcome & congrats on your LO! I'm currently 21w4d & only started feeling my babies in the last few weeks! In the beginning it was very sporadic & the last few days to a week I can feel them almost daily. They seem to be more active/noticeable when I'm laying still or sitting down, as PP mentioned. DH still isn't able to feel anything from the outside yet. It is truly a wonderful feeling, I hope you feel your LO very soon!

  • I only started feeling baby about 2 weeks ago (I am 22 weeks). I rarely feel it during the day. Mostly at night. It took me about a week to realize that it wasn't actually gas bubbles. Sometimes I really have to concentrate to feel the movements.
  • FTM with an anterior placenta. Felt definite and undeniable kicks at 19 weeks exactly, and felt her daily ever since.

I still miss a lot of her movements. The NP at my practice said she was jumping on my placenta like a trampoline and I was just oblivious. She's getting bigger now (24wks) and her kicks have made it to the surface!

    Hope you feel her soon!
  • I started to feel her around 16 weeks. My husband has ben able to feel her since about 20/21 weeks. Im 24 weeks today and her movements are very strong
  • I am now 23 weeks and I felt movement at 13 weeks and I felt kicks at 16 weeks. Ever since then I have felt movements everyday.
  • I'm 25 weeks and still only feel muffled movements randomly throughout the day. I'm a FTM and have an anterior placenta.

  • Another anterior placenta FTM here. I felt sporadic kicks at 18-20 weeks, but only very rarely. In the past week (20-21 weeks), I've felt kicks more frequently, but it definitely still varies day to day. Some days it still seems pretty quiet in there.

My doc said with my placenta placement, it was normal not to feel movement until 22 weeks, and even then it may not be consistent or really noticeable until 26 weeks.

I never got the flutters, though a lot of women do. For me it was more the "swirling" feeling a PP mentioned, like kind of a swimming-pressure sensation, or straight up kicks/punches, which for me feel like distinct taps or knocks from the inside. I feel them the most when laying down after eating, especially in the evenings.

  • It took me awhile to feel anything.  I don't think I started feeling movement until 21 weeks or so.  Baby has more than made up for that though - he is super active now and kicks like crazy!

  • Totally normal. On my first pregnancy I didn't feel my first real kick until about right where you are. This Pregnancy I felt it at 16 weeks and a ton. Your placenta is most likely on the front.
  • I felt flutters at 16 weeks and then definite kicks/punches at 20 weeks and I am a first time mom as well. 22 weeks it was strong enough for DH to feel it for himself. His punches now are getting pretty powerful! I have an anterior placenta as well.
