How many oz does your FF baby drink?

I need some ideas of how much your FF baby drinks!  I'm trying to get DD2 on the bottle, and it's a rough process.  She likes the formula.  She'll drink it from a syringe, but won't take a bottle.  I'm pretty sure it's the fact that it's plastic instead of skin.  She's putting up a good fight.  She's at the point now where she'll take ~1oz from the bottle and then quit, so I have to give her the rest through the syringe.  The only thing is, I'm not sure how much 'the rest' is.  After 3 oz she clamps her lips shut, but that doesn't seem like it's enough. The most she's taken is 15oz in a day.
How many oz per feeding and per day does your baby take on average?
ETA: We're switching completely because of all the sensitivities that she has to so many different foods.

Re: How many oz does your FF baby drink?

  • 7oz/feeding. 5 feedings per day plus some oatmeal and puréed fruits/veggies. I started out with smaller amounts (3-4oz) and increased by half an ounce at a time as needed.

  • 4 oz about every hour and a half plus purees 3 times a day.
  • 6oz x 5 feedings, + 4oz once in the night. We are also just starting on solids, so she has ~1-2T/day of cereal.

  • I would try some different bottles if you haven't already.  My boy was super picky with bottles.  Once we found out which one he liked it was like a dream to feed him.

Usually 6 oz 4-5x a day. Just turned 5 months.
Eta: she usually STTN but if she does wake up in the middle of the night, I give her 4 oz bottle.
  • I've tried the Mam, Tommee Tippee (she's doing the best with that one right now), Medela, Nuk, and Playtex drop-ins.  I have an Avent Naturals too, but haven't opened it yet since she hasn't taken any others with a similar shape anyways. Any other recommendations? @peanutmuse and @CopperT0p
My guess is that we're just going to have to do the syringe for a while until she 'forgets' the boob feel/taste and gets over her attachment to it and gets used to the feel of a bottle nipple.  It's partly a comfort thing for her as well, so we're working on getting attached to a teddy while she drinks. I'm giving it a week...I think.
My kudo's to anyone who's done this already.  It's rough!

  • There's a bottle that came ou that is supposed to mimic exactly what breastfeeding feels like

    https://m.toysrus.com/skava/static/product.html?type=TRU_product_us&url=/product/index.jsp?productId=32647666&cp=2255957.2273443.2255981.2256160.3242151.18675816&parentPage=family&domain=http://www.toysrus.com

There it is. Maybe she would like this one. DD was picky with bottles and would only use Avnet. DS likes the Gerber ones.

  • A lot of girls had luck with the Breastflow bottle early on: https://www.amazon.com/The-First-Years-Breastflow-Bottle/dp/B001R1SOSG

Dr. Brown's and Born Free work better for us, but BZ has never had trouble with a bottle -- so there's that. I will say that the nipple on the Breastflow bottle is definitely more breast-like than others.

  • 60oz over the course of the day before we started solids.

Were down to about 55oz now.

Pardon my language, but holy shit, @jessicabcairns!

I was going to say the same and is that even possible???? Is your LO eating around the clock in MOTN too.

  • 5-6 oz per bottle, 5x a day totaling 25-27oz plus an 1-2 ounces of purees or oatmeal in the evenings. Some days she only drinks 22-24 ounces though. She is not a big eater, but is slowly increasing her feeds.

Did you use the Dr. Browns wide or standard size? Most babies who breastfeed prefer wide nipples, but there is always the chance they prefer a standard size nipple.

Alternatively, you can try a sippy cup if your LO is ready for it and skip the bottle altogether, although they say wait until 6 months for that. Who knows, it may just work.

  • We had to try 4 different bottles, and we kept trying them a few feedings in a row before we moved on to the next.  We tried DH giving him a bottle when I wasn't home, that didn't work. In the end, he would only take a bottle from me for the first month. We were doing 2/day with just an ounce of BM in them so he could have his medication mixed into it.
His favourite in the end was the Dr Brown's standard (not wide) nipple.  We tried Tommee Tippee (my DS1's favourite), Ventaire, and Born Free.  I tried to buy different shape nipples, each of these is a bit different.  Some bottles are really similar, which helped us in the end because the Medela nipples I have from my FreeStyle pump are the same as the Dr Browns.  Mind you the newer Medela nipples are different from mine.

  • Thanks ladies!  She did really good this morning, so we'll see how the rest of the day goes!  I like the looks of some of those bottles, but don't recognize them, so I'm guessing they're not a common bottle around here (Alberta).  Maybe in some of the larger shopping centers, but then I'd have to drive.

  • Around 35oz/day.

5oz/bottle at 6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm and then she basically eats all night until she passes out (probably around 8-9oz).  We've tried to up her oz/bottle, but she always stops at 5 and is happy as a clam, so I guess what she's doing is working for her. And she sleeps all night so I'm not messing with a good thing. ;)

  • @mrsjenni - DD2 slept through the night for like the first time ever last night, and for my mom the night before too.  I'm chalking it up to the formula. She's done some long stretches before, but never 9:30-7:30.

  • I feel like my DD eats too little, but maybe it's just because DS ate so much when he was her age. She has a 6oz. bottle around 715am, 11am, 330pm and somewhere between 7-9pm. She gets rice cereal between 12-1pm at daycare, but we haven't tried any other solids. She rarely wakes up for a MOTN bottle now.

  • We are doing 4-5 bottles a day - usually 4 bottles 8oz each and then if there's a 5th bottle before bed then that one usually only has 4-5oz in it. She typically gets between 30-35 oz/day.

@jessicabcairns‌ wow that's a ton of formula in one day!!!

  • @jessicabcairns - that's a ton of formula!  We've just started and I'm already balking at the cost.  Yikes!

  • Wowzers @jessicabcairns - do they make 12oz bottles? Or do you have to give him two bottles for those feedings? I've never owned anything larger than a 4oz bottle for either boy!

  • Glad to see this post today. DS has been hungrier lately, and taking an extra bottle pretty much every day. This brings him up to 34 oz a day plus one or two servings of purees or oatmeal. I was wondering if it was too much, glad to see it's pretty standard!
