Whooping Cough Outbreak in California

There have been a ton of news reports lately about a whopping cough epidemic in California. News reports are encouraging pregnant women to get the vaccine.

I called my dr and he seemed to be indifferent about the vaccine and the outbreak as well. Has anyone ever had this vaccine or spoken to their dr about it?

Thanks!

Re: Whooping Cough Outbreak in California

  • My midwife said last Friday that I'd have it at my next appointment (28 weeks) and that she is careful to push it because of all the recent outbreaks.

I'm in NY, but my MFM ran a few titers at my 12 week appointment to see if re-vaccination/boostering of various vaccines would be necessary, and I will get the Tdap vax (as will DH and all future grandparents, aunts & uncles) when I enter third trimester.

ETA: I will also add that my MFM does not see it as optional - he tells you that you will be getting the vaccine at your 28 week appointment.  It's up to the patient to object, otherwise it's standard.

5 cycles of "TTC" - 3 intentional, 2 not so intentional.  5 BFPs.  My rainbow arrived 10/15/14.

  • Our pedi was adamant that we get it.  I think I got mine in the hospital right after DD was born, and DH got his before she was born, I think.  I think she recommended that grandparents and people who would spend a lot of time around DD also get it, but wasn't as concerned.  She asks every year whether all the grandparents and babysitters had flu shots, too.

  • I learned (from @theresat858‌, I think) that it is a routine recommendation now for all pregnant women to get the vaccine at 28 weeks. It provides baby with limited immunity until he is old enough to be vaccinated.

  • Thanks ladies! This is very helpful info.

I have an appointment with my doctor this Thursday for a 24 week check up, so I am going to ask him about it again in person.

  • My OB is going to give it to me in the next month or so.  Biggest issue is getting my parents vaccinated - not a fight to get them to agree to it, as that wasn't an issue (they all agreed without question).  But getting one of their providers in TX to give it to them is a struggle.  My Mom even went to Walgreens and they refused to give it to her as her last one was 3 years ago.  With all of them flying to OH (SIL due in July) and VA (October) and my Dad/stepMom flying to China in September, my OB would like them to get a booster before Schroeder arrives (and preferably before my nephew arrives in July)!

Baby Girl "C" arrived on 10/07/14 (39 weeks, 6 days)

  • Thanks for the reminder. Just called my OB to see if I need to come in to get the shot with going for this coming weekend.

  • Thank you all for your advice and recommendations. I had no idea that we were supposed to be vaccinated for whooping cough during every pregnancy! I will be bringing this up with my OB and talking with my in laws and parents about getting a booster this year before October.

  • Ditto everyone else.  Getting one during pregnancy and making sure DH gets his booster if needed.  Our families got their boosters before DD was born in December 2012, so they're already set.  I don't even mess around with this one.  Whooping cough is serious business.

  • I understand that this passes a tempoary immuinty on to the child and I may consider getting one if I was in a hot spot area where the infection was very active, however I am not putting anything in my body other than organic vitimans and food. Some of the additives that they are placing in vaccines are dangerous for the human anatomy. I would defenatly do more research before considering this an option.

Another scientist here, with additional clinical training, and your above comment does more harm than good.  Google whooping cough + infant death and then decide if you want to roll the dice.

Please do not promote or advocate scientifically refuted information.  If you want a debate or discussion, bring academic peer-reviewed sources; no blog posts or links to nutrition or organic/clean eating sites.

Also, if you are going to try to provide medical advice or want to be taken seriously, I advise (at the very least) spell checking your own posts.

    Boom!

  • I've tried googling and couldn't find the answer - how long is the normal Tdap vaccine effective? DH and I were last immunized when DS1 was an infant. Given the new recommendations, I plan on getting a new one for myself but have no idea if DH needs a new one or not.
  • I am 24 weeks and just got the vaccine at my appointment today. I'm going to make my husband get it soon too.
