Do you leak urine? PSA (& update to bladder my probs)

I had my first PT appointment today for my leaking issues and good news - she thinks PT will help me! YAY! I mentioned that I started leaking a little with coughing/sneezing after DD but figured that was just the joys of motherhood. The PT told me that ANY leaking is not normal and to spread the word to all my mom friends.

So - PSA:If you leak at all or even just with activity or pressure (like sneezing) you should reach out to your Dr for help.

And apparently, I have been doing Kegels wrong which is too bad, since I've basically been in a constant state of Kegel since 2009.

I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • Good to know ! What causes the leaking?

I need to mention this to my doctor tomorrow. Thanks! :)

Glad physical therapy will help you!

  • Yes, my issue is weak pelvic floor but the PT was able to determine exactly where the weakness is and recommend specific excercises for those muscles. I go back next week and we'll do some biofeedback, as well. I'm also keeping a pee diary. Fun times!

I am a yoga fanatic, even did it throughout my pregnancy. I just don't have time for it right now but I am looking for some yoga videos to do on my own. I wanted to make sure I'm not doing anything that will counteract my progress.

  • Today was lots of talking, then pants off, then more talking. The pelvic part was a lot of me squeezing or baring down while she felt around so she could get idea off weakness and tone. She also felt externally in the pants region and my abdominals.

  • I had to really push my dr for more treatment options besides kegels. I basically said, I'm 36 and lead an active life. I should not have to wear a pad 24/7!

Apparently this type of PT is relatively new, only gaining popularity in the last 20 years or so.

  • I saw my OB.

Sorry for anyone else who's dealing with this. It truly sucks. But at least there's hope! I was telling DH grandma about this. She's 90. And she said I wish I would have done something about that after my kids. I've been peeing myself for 60 years!

  • Relieved for you that you have a treatment plan! That has got to be terrible...

Just curious - how does one do kegels incorrectly? Also, I've heard/seen (and maybe it was on here) that there are some sort of weights you can get to help with the pelvic floor? Wonder if your PT will incorporate those at some point.

  • When I was doing kegels for the therapist today she said I was also clenching my leg muscles and abdomen which is basically cheating. My pelvic floor only gets a tiny benefit that way. I just did my excercises which included 10 reps of 5 second kegels (done correctly) and DAMN, my lady bits are TIRED!!

  • Oh! And I'm sure there are more challenging things to come, exercise wise. I've heard of weights also. and I'm a little afraid!

  • Thanks for satisfying my curiosity! The weights would freak me out too - crazy!

  • I've done PT for this as well - some places have a device they put in while you do kegels and it measures the pressure in different areas, putting it on a display so you can visilually see when you're doing it right. Wouldn't call it fun by any means, but it can be so helpful if you're having issues.
