Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Bedtime

DS is 17.5 months and I've been a SAHM since he was born.  I recently got a job and will be working 3 days a week.  DS will be going to daycare, for the first time, while I am at work.  We are hoping to get him into more of a structured schedule for bedtime before he starts daycare.  Up to this point, I'd say we have been in a routine and not necessarily a schedule.  We eat dinner, bathe, PJs, brush teeth, and quiet play/read books until DS starts rubbing his eyes or yawning...usually between 7 and 8.  He usually wakes up between 5 and 7.  He will need to be up by 6 when he starts daycare.

So my question is what time do your LOs go to bed and wake up?

Re: Bedtime

  • He goes to bed at 8:15p (depending on how tired he is, he'll fall asleep anywhere between 0-30 minutes) He wakes up around 7:45a (wakes up naturally) He also takes a 1.5-2 hour nap.

  • DD gets in the bath at 6:30, and is in her crib asleep by 7:15pm.  On the weekends she naturally wakes up between 7-7:30am, during the week we wake her at 6am (3 days) or 7am (2 days).

She naps 1-1.5 hours daily at daycare, but will take 2-3 hour naps at home on the weekend.

During the school year DS is in bed by 6:30. He normally wakes around 6. This past school year he was still taking 2 naps a day, but now we are moving to one 3 hour nap. DD who is almost 5 goes to sleep around 7:30 and some mornings I have to wake her up at 6:45 to get of the door by 7:15.

  • DS is in bed by 7:30. It can take anywhere from 5-45 min for him to fall asleep depending on his day. Weekdays we wake him by 6:15 if he isn't up earlier on his own to be out the door by 6:30 and at DC by 7 (he eats breakfast at DC so his morning is just getting him up and dressed for the day). They nap from 1-3 at DC. Weekends we get him up around 7 if he isn't up before then (though we don't go to him before 6:30). Naps and bedtime are basically the same.
  • DD is 18.5 mos and is in the crib by 8. She babbles herself to sleep within 15-30 mins and usually wakes between 6:30-7. We wake her if not up by 7 since she too goes to daycare. The set nap time for her class is 1-3. Most days she naps the whole time. We keep her on that same nap time for wknds, days off, etc. Good luck! It will be an adjustment for your LO at that age but it will only get easier and it's fun for them!

  • DS is 16 mos. and goes to bed at 8:30 p.m. and gets up between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. He takes two naps that equal about three hours total. Thank God for naps.

  • My son, almost 18mo, also needs to be up at 6 for day care. He is usually in bed by 7:15 and some mornings we wake him at 6 and others he wakes up on his own before then.

He eats dinner around 5:45-6 and we get in the bath between 6:30 and 6:45. He takes a quick bath and we get into pjs, read books and go to bed.

At day care he takes a 2-2.5 hour nap right after lunch.

Good luck with your new schedule.

DS is in his crib by 7:30pm and usually falls asleep fairly quickly. We wake him up around 6:30am on weekdays for DC and he naps about 1.5-2 hours at DC. On the weekends, he goes to bed at the same time and usually wakes up by himself between 7-7:30am - recently he has been taking longer naps, around 2.5-3 hours on the weekends.

I have read that 13 hours of total sleep is normal at this age but it also depends on the child. Maybe keep to your normal bedtime for now and see if he is sleepy when you wake him, if so then push bedtime a little earlier.

  • DD is almost 15 months. Usually in bed around 7, but sometimes 6:30 if she's fussy or didn't nap well. She wakes on her own around 5:45 or 6. About half the time, after breakfast she will go back to sleep with DH in our bed for another 45 min while I get ready. The other half of the time, when she won't settle back down, DH gets up and plays with her while I get ready.
