LO doesn't want to eat

LO was doing totally fine with his eating until like 5 days ago.  Then he started refusing the bottle, arching his back, crying toward the end of the bottle and not drinking much, etc.  I ended up taking him to the doctor and they prescribed Zantac for him.  I just got a call from daycare that said he completely refused his 10 am bottle and went to sleep.

I'm kind of freaking out.  He's already really small and has trouble gaining weight when he eats normally.

Could it be teething?

Re: LO doesn't want to eat

  • My LO was having issues eating for the few days before our 4 mos appointment.  The way he was refusing the bottle sounds similar.   The Dr. discovered he has a viral infection (kind of like cankersores) in his throat.  Poor little guy.  Dr. said have him eat what he will, it'll get better in a week.
If you decide to go see the dr again, maybe something to have them look for?

  • @meghan14 hmm, our doctor looked in his mouth but didn't say anything after he looked so i assume it looked fine.

@njb750 we moved up a nipple size about 3 weeks ago.  it was very helpful, but then this started.  I don't know that we need to move up again to size 3.
  • I should add, he is going to be 5 months on Friday.
  • No suggestions, just a hug

Have you ruled out ear infection?  Sometimes that can make babies not want to eat - it hurts to swallow and/or to be reclined or lay on their side to take a bottle.  Or could there be another illness making him tired and grumpy?

I feel you on the really small thing.  My LO has fallen off the growth chart, so I always stress when he doesn't want to nurse as often as usual.  This may just be a grumpy, sleepy day, so hopefully it resolves itself!  Good luck!

  • @soap1 we went to the doctor yesterday (because of this) and he said his ears look fine.  He does have a cough, which might be reflux-related.  He has a cold too (as do I) so maybe that's part of it?

And yeah, the growth chart thing is the bane of my existence.  He is on it, but baaaaaarely.  Like in the less than 1%.

i'm so sorry! poor baby and poor you! Lots of T&Ps!

Did you end up doing the testing? How did it go, if you did? Feel free to ignore if I'm being too nosey.
We are going to do it, but it's not until July.

re: because small- I will say that our pedi said as long as LO is not losing weight, is still growing in height, and is meeting milestones, he isn't worried about where on the growth chart LO is!  I still stress about it more than I should, but it is reassuring. :)

  • @djtippietoes Did they check his throat when he was at the doctor yesterday? Sounds exactly like what my LO had, cold and all. The pedi checked her throat, and sure enough she had sores in her throat which made it painful for her to eat. If not, it's worth checking out.
I think he did.  He looked in his mouth at least.

I hate the growth chart with a fiery passion, @djtippietoes and @soap1

DJ, I'm sorry you're going through this. I've heard that teething can definitely cause babies to lose their appetites - is he gnawing on his hands a lot? We tried this the other day and it worked wonders -- soak part of a washcloth in some formula, and pop it in the freezer. Then let LO suck/chew on the washcloth. The coldness helps his gums, and he's getting SOME formula as he's sucking.

We would also give her the bottle right afterwards, because her gums were semi-numb from the coldness, and we alternated back and forth. She ended up eating about 2 oz from the bottle. It took forever, but it worked.

  • @codypup he gnaws on his hands constantly.  I will try the formula/washcloth thing!

More hugs from me. My DS is also barely on the growth chart, and we've had weight issues from the beginning. He only wants to eat 4x day, so I wake him up around 11pm just to get a few more ounces. How much do you give him at a time? We experimented with smaller, more frequent bottles, but he prefers larger amounts less often (6 oz 4x/day.) Good luck! I hope it's just a phase.
He was eating 4-5 oz, 6 times a day.
  • @hashtagrainbow  Our kids are like two peas in a pod.

But yeah, he's having wet diapers.  And I called the daycare back about an hour after they called me and they said he was currently eating.  But it's definitely not as voraciously as normal.

Glad to hear he's eating something. Hopefully he was just having an off few days.

  • Thinking of you! I hope he continues to keep eating.  Teething can definitely affect their appetite though so that could be part of the problem.
  • Great update DJ!!

((((Hugs)))) Mama!! I'm sorry you're going through so much all at once. It seems like you went right from the testing concerns to this. I have no advice other than what PP have said, so I'm offering my support! Hope you can quickly get this figured out and catch a break! You certainly deserve one! ((((Hugs again))))
