  We didn't use a base for DD and we don't use one for DS. We took the base out a few months ago because the lady in the hospital put it in so his carseat is straight up and down. I think its fine to go without

  You can always rent seats from where u rent the car so u can save more hassle and not even bring a car seat... no input on using it without the base. I have never done it.

  When I visit my parents, we use their car without the base and its fine.

  Not recommended because you don't know who used it before, what kind of care has been taken for it, if it's been abused, or if it's expired.

  
  

  The base is great because you only have to install it once, via the base. Every other time you put LO in the car seat it simply clicks in. It eliminates the opportunities for error. However, installing through the base is not safer than installing with the seat belt, without the base, assuming both are installed correctly. We have a base in my car (the primary vehicle DS rides in), but we use the seat belt when we ride in DH's car. So yes, assuming you can properly and comfortably install LO's car seat, you can leave the base at home.

  Ive used it without the base in my sisters car and everything was fine. I tried it without the base in my car and he was more foreward and his head kept facing downward its like I couldn't get the thing level which made me super nervous . Im guessing its just the way the seat in my car is.

  I've used the car seat without a base in my mom's Tahoe here and there and I feel it's safe. I DEFINITELY recommend looking on YouTube to see if you can find an instructions video of someone installing your car seat without a base. My car seat had basic instructions for how to do it, but after following those, I wasn't very confident in the safety of it. So I looked up how to install my Grace car seat without a base on YouTube and found a super helpful video. After following her instructions, I was able to get the seat in much more securely.

  Thanks ladies. We'll practice doing it before we go to make sure we know what we're doing. I wouldn't trust a car rental seat so we'll definitely take our own.
