Bumpers Now

I would like to get your opinions about adding bumpers to the crib now.  Reason behind this is, last night when LO woke up in the middle of the night her leg was sticking out between the crib rails all the way up to her thigh and it wasn't in a way that would have been easy to get out herself.

I know bumpers is a SIDS risk when they are newborns, but what about how that they are older.  I just don't want her to get hurt if she gets a leg or arm stuck in the railings on her crib.

Suggestions please.

  • I use the mesh bumpers for exactly that reason.  The girls were waking up with their legs sticking out up to their fat thighs and they couldn't get them out.

  • Mesh kind here also, but we have had it in there since he started sleeping in the crib. DS got his legs stuck in the bars from the start.

  • We don't currently use anything as we haven't had the limb through the crib issue, but I have seen some people put the mesh liners on the outside of the crib until 12 months.

  • Yep... also mesh

  • We use mesh and have it woven through so it is on the outside of the crib except for like 4 slats to weave it through.

  • We use mesh.

  • SIDS are still a risk, and this is the stage you would be removing the bumpers because they can use them to stand on when they start pulling up. My little one gets arms/legs through the crib slats, but she's figured out how to get them out.

  • I think you would reverse what you see in the picture. Weave them through one slat on each side to keep them in place. I think I read somewhere to avoid the corners for keeping them in place as it's one of the easiest places for them to use them to climb!!

  • I think the issue is now that they will start to use any bumper (mesh or otherwise) to climb out of the crib. We don't currently (and aren't planning on using) use any type of bumper as we haven't had an issue with limbs through slats. If he's still not pulling himself up yet, you probably have some time, but once he does that, I'd probably take them off completely or figure out a way to attach to the outside of the crib.

  • Mesh since day one....well, 6 months because that's when she went in there. And I agree with @ellestaxx, I would not rig up anything not approved by the manufacturer.

Remember my cousin lost his son at 11 months from SIDS. With that said I know it's really rare at the older ages. I am going to be purchasing a set of mesh bumpers today. Unfortunately, D is sporting a bruised cheek from smacking her face into her crib. When her chubby thigh was stuck in the slats...

SIDS is still a risk until 12 months, albeit less likely by the month at this point. However, we don't use bumpers. DD was getting her thigh stuck in the crib bars, but after a few weeks stopped doing that. Maybe she figured it out?

ETA: I also don't want to give her anything to use to climb out of the crib. There's times she seems part ape. Last week she tore the baby monitor from the top of the crib and then slammed it against the crib bars repeatedly. That got mommy running in!

I am glad you figured out that bumpers are a SIDS risk, but baby monitors on the crib are a stangulation risk.

And electrocution risk, choking risk, etc. depending in the type of monitor.

Also, mobiles have to be taken down once babies learn how to stand up in the crib (or, hopefully, just before they learn to stand up!) for the same reasons.
  • If your baby suffocates in their bedding that is not SIDS. When a baby dies of SIDS they stop breathing with no apparent cause.
We do not use bumpers. He got his legs stuck a few times but he figured it out.

Then why does the AAP suggest no crib bumpers to help prevent SIDS?

Yes it causes a possible suffocation risk. However, the AAP have put crib bumpers as part of their SIDS information. Therefore if someone is worried about crib bumpers causing SIDS then I think they are not in the wrong.

The "unexplained" cases are believed to be caused by re-breathing of CO2, which can build up with bumpers, extra bedding, etc. that block air circulation around baby. (Why ceiling fans are recommended as preventative).

Basically, your body has mechanisms that trigger you to breathe. Changes in concentrations of oxygen and CO2 effect those mechanisms.
  • Thanks for all the input.  It has only happened that one time so I will wait for now and see what happens.  We have been having issues with her sleep schedule so maybe once that regulates again she will sleep more soundly and not move so much.
  • We use the mesh bumpers and weave them through one slot and around the other all the way around the crib

@sooner1981 and @nryan55 - you don't have a ceiling-mounted mosquito net over your crib to prevent potentially fatal mosquito borne diseases like dengue or chikungunya.

when you can tell me how to wall mount a monitor and still see through the net, let me know. i could switch to an audio monitor and forgo video, but then i couldn't check breathing or see a leg stuck in the slats, etc

i'm using my monitor with the wires affixed to the back of the crib slats so they can't be pulled in. after the camera attack, i moved the monitor to the tallest side of the crib and dropped the mattress lower. hopefully we move back to the US before she can reach it again--so far, so good.

DS still wears a sleep sack so that prevents his legs from getting stuck.

Same here. Haven't had any issues so far.

  • We don't use any bumpers and she's only gotten her leg stuck once during a nap.

No bumpers here of any kind, mesh or traditional. I've thought about putting a mesh one in, but figured it's a little late now.

Plus, he's only been stuck a couple times and it didn't seem to bother him (I still dragged him back to the middle of the crib, though.)

  • I wouldn't worry about it. And SIDS risk doesn't technically end until they are 1. But DD gets caught in the slats sometimes and it doesn't seem to bother her. One time I did go in an remove her leg from the slat. But I pretty much leave her alone unless she seems bothered.
