Mice

There are mice in my house. Ick.
::shudders::

Clearly I'm not dealing with this well. I feel like you ladies are experts in a lot of things. Is it possible to have just a small problem?

There have been no signs of mice. No droppings, no disturbed food, trust me, I went through everything in cabinets and put it all in sealed plastic containers.

Friday night I heard a rustling in the trash, DH convinced me it was nothing. Saturday night I had fallen asleep on the couch and woke to DH saying there was a mouse in the kitchen. A chase ensued. He made me help, it was awful. It got away.

Sunday we set a ton of traps, 3 dead mice this morning. We plan to keep setting traps for at least a week no matter what. We're going to go around and seal up any holes, but it's an old house with field stone basement.

Do you think this sounds like a recent issue that we can take care of quickly? Or do you think I have been deluding myself and have a big infestation?

Tl;dr version - how do I know when my mouse problem is gone?? Any advice?

Re: Mice

  • I had one mouse this winter.

Everyone kept telling me there had to be more, but honestly, I found the sucker dead after a month or so and I haven't had any issues.

But I would keep the traps up if you can...just to make sure.

  • Thank you! Anecdotes make me feel better! I know I'm being a ridiculous baby about this. I just feel like my kitchen is contaminated right now. Last night after we set the traps, I made lunchs/cleaned up as quick as possible because I didn't want to be down there when they started appearing.
  • tootsie rolls in traps have always worked well for us. also, my brother does this up north at his cottage, but I think way  moree peanut butter

  • OMG @uconnhuskie007‌ I'm dying inside for you. The love tit is definitely for sympathy.

@smootchy I've seen that idea online. I think I might go for it. For some reason I'm afraid if making it... not sure why, maybe of what the results will look like in the morning? I shouldn't stress that since I am NOT going downstairs before DH until this is somewhat resolved. Screw working out in the morning, I'll jog in the afternoons, it's not worth it!
  • GOOD LUCK! I was freaking out looking for a diagram for you because I didn't want to see the results. Lol, every pic was a "how to" with actually pics. ::EEEEKKKKK:::
just remember water in the bottom, or else they just jump out.
  • Just agreeing with others that it could be a small problem. We live out on 16 acres and get at least two field mice a year. I usually find their droppings (UGH), we set a trap and by the next morning, it's gone. I don't see another one for at least six months or so.

But yeah, just keep setting traps! When you've had empty traps for a while, you're probably okay.

@uconnhuskie007 I read a story like that once before, but the mouse was alive. I now shake out every single shoe before I put it on. Dying a little for you.

I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years. And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I'll love you a thousand more.
  • We had them in our basement at our old house and didn't really realize it until one crawled up the stairs and snuck under the bathroom door when DH was in there. We set out glue traps and caught about 6 of them. We had more traps set out for quite awhile and then never caught any more and didn't see any more evidence of mice, so I think we got them all.

  • We got 3 the first night, 1 more last night. Plus we put poison in the basement (where the kids don't go) and a cabinet above the fridge that all of a sudden had some weird debris Sunday morning. I just read something about them moving and hoarding the poison, so I'm going to get it out of the house altogether, but hopefully it's already worked it's magic.

Definitely get the poison out. My parents used poison and they later found stockpiles of it around the house. Under the sofa, behind the fridge etc., sometimes rooms away from where the poison was placed.

  • Yikes! Well I know what DH and I are doing after the kids are in bed tonight.
Woohoo! Search for poison! I'm still in the stage where I'm afraid to open things where they might be/have been, so this should be extra fun. I've been really good about the dieting lately, but I think I'm going to need all the booze tonight.

Thanks for the info, as disturbing as it was.
  • Yeah.  We didn't have any little kids to worry about, but they did have pets.  Luckily my parents found it before the dogs and cats did, but it really scared my dad and he said he'd never use poison again.
