BPA-free =/= good

I guess I'll be getting rid of LO's new camelbak.  Dang it.

And the kicker for those of you that don't want to click through ...

new paper in the journal Environmental Health identifies specific plastic products—including AVENT baby bottles, CamelBak sippy cups, and Lock & Lock food storage containers—that leach estrogen-mimicking chemicals.

Greeeeat, right?  I definitely appreciate that these things are being found out, but couldn't they please do these studies *before* they release these products?  I feel bad that LO used born free bottles now ... but at the same time there appears to be some contention over the veracity of the data.  So who in the world knows?

  • My friend works for the national institute of health and a lady she works with did research on bpa and the new chemicals they use as a substitute for bpa. She says that she would take bpa over the new chemicals. I personally use Klean kanteen for my boys. I stay away from plastic as much as I can.

Okay, so what exactly am I supposed to give my little guy to drink from?  :(
My take away was just that you shouldn't leave them out in the sun or heat them. I'm not too worried about it

What about the dishwasher? How hot are we talking?

The dishwasher is a great point...we handwash mostly just because we have limited supplies, but I would probably (maybe) limit putting them in the dishwasher to once a week or month instead of daily or something

@subliminalrabbit‌ This is my dilemma too. I'm looking into stainless steel and glass bottles - but the options for outlets ( sippy, straw, sport, etc) seem much more limited! To me the most disturbing part to me is that there are a number listed on there that leach even without exposure to UV or weren't tested under that category.

Kleen kanteen sippy cups are great. Ds1 has been using them since he was 1.

The article talks about after UV exposure, not necessarily heat. There isn't really clarification.

We use the Klean Kanteen stainless steel sippy cup.  It was kind of a pain because I ended up buying this but with a sports top, which leaks a lot, instead of the sippy top.  So I ended up buying the sippy adapter and sippy spouts separately, but I think it ended up saving me money in the long run.

I also bought the LifeFactory glass sippy bottle, but it's way too heavy, and I'm still worried about it breaking so we don't use it but might in the future.

Here is a review of non-plastic sippies that I found helpful.

The other place you need to be careful when it comes to BPA is canned foods, which is a big pain in the ass because canned foods are so easy.  There are a few brands that offer BPA-free cans...Eden Foods is the only one I know off the top of my head.  But from the reading I've done, avoiding just about all canned foods is the only good answer.  >:P
  • @nykkolaughs - I found that one while I was looking last night too - shows you how small the market is for these things!

If you've already ordered it - can you let us know when you get it if you think the straws could be replaced?  And what size the straw is in the cup?  Because it seems like you could make it an even better product by replacing the existing straw with a stainless steel or silicone straw (like the ones you posted above).

Thanks for doing some serious legwork on this subject!

  • @nykkolaughs‌ Can you tell me what resources you used that talk about sippy cups causing lisps?!

  • So yeah WebMD = not exactly the most credible website you can find.

The other article is just written by a speech pathologist so not exactly a good research article either.  But no where in that article do they say that the use of a sippy cup leads to a lisp - no cause and effect in that one.
  • Okay then link me CREDIBLE resources, not just random articles or WebMD.

You're telling people that one thing causes another, so I'd like to see some research to back it up.

I got a little worried after seeing it can cause lisps since ds1, who is 3, prefers the kleen kanteen with the sippy spout over the sport spout because it comes out too fast so I asked a few of my friends, who are speech pathologists. They said they never heard of such a thing and not to worry about it. For what it's worth, ds1 doesn't has a lisp and didn't have delayed speech.

Edited to add- he carries his kleen kanteen around filled with water all day long. I carry mine around and so does he. He drinks from cups for meals.

My kid drinks from a sippy for about 5 minutes 5 times a day.  My kids likely do something far more dangerous for far more than 25 minutes every day lol

    Preach.
  • I just don't see how sucking out of a sippy is significantly different than sucking out of a straw. Maybe I suck wrong? ;)

I think it becomes an issue if all they do is suck on it all day long. The article that i found online mentioned bringing the cup to bed!
Js not bringing any cup to bed. I dont care if he takes a sippy, a straw, a bottle or whatever else is out there. He wont be bringing it to bed!

Never say never! I didn't think id do it either, but sipping water is something that helps snap ds1 out of his night terrors...and a sippy spills much less than a straw or other cup. He started having one in bed after age 2.
