3rd Trimester

Am I crazy?

So two weeks ago dh and I drove to Atlantic city (about an hour and a half from where we live) for our babymoon. We had a blast but couldn't stay long bc he had to go back to work. So this week coming up he is free for 3 nights and wants to go again. I will be 38 weeks. We are packing the hospital bag and carseat just in case. But I'm nervous to be that far from our hospital. Do you think an hour and a half drive is too far if we go into labor? I know every situation is different but this is my first baby so generally speaking?

  • My doc asks that his patients not travel after 34 weeks. If you're going to drive, make sure you stop and stretch often. You're more prone to blood clots in your legs. I personally wouldn't go.

  • I would go, have fun, and enjoy the time before baby gets here!  An hour and a half isn't bad at all.
On our way to baby#2!  Praying for a healthy and happy delivery next June!
  • I think it depends on your situation.  I've known people who have been told by their doctor not to be more than an hour drive from their hospital after 36 weeks.
  • I would ask your doc, but an hour and a half doesn't seem that bad. He probably would just adjust how soon you would need to come in. Instead of contractions 5 mins apart, maybe 8-10 mins?

  • I would not go, but my doctor says no further than an hour away after 35 weeks.

"SecretAgentKate" uh, my hospital is an hour and a half drive from my house. i wouldn't worry that much

    This. Plus 10-15 minutes.

  • Shore Memorial is a great hospital, if you had to deliver near AC :)
  • Early stages of labor can take hours. Just be in tuned with your body and make sure to take lots of breaks. An hour and a half isn't too far away. Be prepared :)

  • My general rule, if the title of your thread is asking if you're crazy, then the answer is probably yes.

That being said, I don't think a 1.5 hour drive from your hospital is that big a deal, unless it could get drastically worse with traffic.
  • There is a risk. Will there be other hospitals on the way in case of emergency? It's up to you , some people live 1.5 hours from the hospital.

  • Honestly it depends on how comfortable you feel, not what internet strangers would do. With that said, personally I wouldn't because I would probably be a beast trapped in a car that long with DH during labor.

  • Meh.  Doctors tell people not to travel more than an hour away because they're assuming you want to deliver with them.  As long as you realize and acknowledge that there's a chance that may not happen (and really, that's ALWAYS a chance when you travel), go for it.  Lots of people drive an hour or more each way for work every day.

  • If I have to go to the hospital during morning rush hour my drive will be 1hr+to the hospital, so I wouldn't worry about it. Plus, it is not like you are driving an hour and a half to the middle of no where. If you had a true emergency, there are hospitals in AC. Have fun!
