Postpartum recovery like your usual period?

Hi Ladies, just wondering from any of you who have been thru this, is the post delivery bleeding like your usual period or much heavier?  I don't get a heavy flow with my period, am I delusional to hope for light bleeding, and not the horror I've been warned of?

  • much heavier and longer than normal period. weeks rather than days

This. I also don't usually have a heavy flow, so don't be surprised by larger clots you may not be used to seeing in the mix either.
  • Much worse than a period.  Heavier, longer and more painful.  Plus if you tore and needed stitches, plenty of stinging when you pee! YAY.

  • My first lasted 11 weeks but pretty light. The first week I needed heavy thicker pad and then just a slim and a then a panty liner by 9 weeks...

2nd baby I barely bled at all and it was over by 8 days, returned with a giant gush at 6 weeks (I thought I bled out, haha) and then stopped after 3 days. They said I must of had a clot
  • I had heavy bleeding for about 1.5 weeks PP.  It wasn't anything like a period.  It was very, very heavy (heavier than my heaviest AF days) with clots (lochia).

  • Like a period in that it started heavy and got lighter and lighter but it was heavier in general and lasted for weeks. Also blood clots, I was not expecting those things to be as big as they were!
I found it very uncomfortable but not overly much worse than period pain but apparently my periods used to hurt more than the average anyway. It also hurt and bled more towards the end/after each feed (BFing) because BFing 'pumps' your uterus.
  • Lovely. Thanks for responses to my query, wasn't expecting so many. Will definitely plan for the worst and hope it won't be that bad in the end. Everyone goes thru it.

  • I hate to break it to you - the amount you bleed will be the least of your worries in your pp recovery (unless you bleed for months on end like I did..)
    sorry!
  • Much heavier and longer than the average period! Get three different types of pads - heavy overnights , regulars, and panty liners. Everyone is different, so no one can tell you how much or how long, but you will be glad to have the "pad" options when you come home and post recovery.
  • My bleeding was heavy for the first day or so and then it was like a normal period. That continued until about 2 weeks post partum, then it got light. I switched to panty liners around 3 weeks post, and am still wearing them now for spotting (4 weeks).

In terms of pain, the only pain I really had was from the tear and hemmorhoids. I had some cramping when breastfeeding but it felt more like bad gas pain than period cramps. That all lasted for the first week and then tapered off.
